There's nothing wrong with piggybacks (unichips), there're not bad for value. However, with the newer age cars (MY01 onwards), where there's an option for reflashes, it would be better option, given the potential extra tuning options available.
The Haltech full replacement ECUs aren't bad, and as the saying goes, an ecu is as good as the person that tunes it. Aaron is a pretty knowleagle tuner for Haltechs and other than him, there are not many in WA that has a fair bit of experience with Haltechs (and Subarus). This will end up being one of those threads again |

i dislike piggybacks because they are inaccurate and they are a process of fooling the factory ecu into working outside of its factory mapping capabilities, not goot, especially when lots of boost is being wound in etc because all it takes is for the piggy back to have a slight malfunction and lean fuelling and massive timing changes can happen very quickly. If you are playing with cars and need them to have tuning done, VERSO, Autistic, Lunk or MoTeC are the only ways to go to get things done properly... my 5c worth

Either get a full standalone computer similar to a Motec/Autronic/Link ecu or a full ecu reflash simiar to Verso/Ecutek.
Mixing an interceptor with a learning ecu could be bad in some cases. How can you be sure that the "tune" that it has now will remain for the life of the vehicle? Take this image example: (stole it from one of intra's previous posts) Notice something funny? As boost rises (Yellow Line) , the engine starts pulling timing out throughout the range where you are on boost (Pink line). So from about 3300rpm - 5300rpm (Blueish line) your missing a few degrees here and there. Now compare that to a proper ecu or reflash where you have the option to advance that timing to make more power (and safely). Anyways its your money and your choice , up to you to decide. Specs on this graph are Impreza MY01 WRX. Unichip. 14 - 15 PSI.

I've only heard feedback on Haltech from other forums (mostly Queenslanders) and no issues with it so far.
But agree with your other post. Too many ppl are willing to spend big $ on turbos, coolers, injectors, fuel pumps, and only to skim on the module that controls all the power, efficiency and most importantly the reliability aspect. Sounds great telling the whole world you got a shit loads of HPs, but how much of it is slowly causing your engine internals to melt. |
