I tend to agree with Kato here. You've got to remember that the Impreza is not just WRX, although that's what we as car nuts think. Subaru are pitching the Impreza to the whole general public. So they've developed a car to do that. Yes, it's conservative, but maybe Mr Joe Average doesn't want to stand out in traffic. He wants a good reliable safe car - enter the new Impreza. The WRX is one part of the equation, it's got what it's always had. Awesome bang for your bucks. It's based on a conservatively designed car, so the WRX will also be a little conservative in appearance.

I think, and hope, that Subaru has left the real hardcore 'look at me' performance car for STi.

My 2c

Cheers

Another weak approval.
From the pics the 08 has better visual integration than previous models but it is still ‘ordinary’ in appearance at best. It is roomier, I hope no bigger, and I’’ll miss the frameless windows.
With much the same motor sitting lower, stiffer body, less weight – it will perform and it will sell.

Someone on rexnet commented that it should be called "Betty"... Hee...

Classic -> Bugeye -> Peanut -> Pig -> Betty...

Perhaps the name of this thread should be "Introducing ugly betty"

Hmmm interesting...from drive.com.au

Quote:
While the WRX has been toned down to be more conservative in an effort to appeal to a different audience, Subaru insiders suggest the range-topping STi model will be more radical than ever. With bold wings and more performance, the STi is due to debut in October at the Tokyo motor show.

The leaked images of the new hatchback-style Impreza model have already stirred debate on motoring forums, and the official pictures of the more conservative WRX range are guaranteed to polarise more opinions.

the sedan looks ok, its just that grille that ruins it.

Nice chop their Jimmy.

STi is suppose to be way more distintive, i have a feeling it will look the goods.

this is the bit that worries me slightly.

Impreza WRX STI has always represented the ultimate performance vehicle within the Impreza range - targeted specifically toward the driving purist.

It will represent outstanding value - making ultimate performance accessible to consumers for less than $100,000.

Other thing i noticed on www.subaru.com.au some shots of the hatch looks like it has angel eyes.

I agree, most people will look at that and think, awesome, its gonna look hella mean... but I see them releasing a reasonably good looking car with very good performance.... but at a price tag to compete with a Porsche Boxter(under $100,000.... should be under $60k as per the previous models??)

i agree with some that the more you look at it the more its not a bad design - thou couldve designed the rear better rather than making it look pretty much almost the same as a the camry lineup - thou as prev mentioned to, its too 'toyota' looking, but like doesnt toyota own subaru now? im pretty sure i read somewhere that they do now. thou i could be mistaken. dont like the hatch at all. too much like the other hatches around. looks like it will be STi unless that disappoints as well, though reading reports on it, it looks to be very promising.
