Stock airbox with a decent filter is the go!
Only reason i went pod is because of silicon intake and no afm.

indeed the bang for buck option would be to remove the resonator and install an elbow, a good panel filter and she'll be right mate.

I believe a Pod mounted in the guard is the best performing but it has disadvantages. The filter will get dirtier quicker. and there is a risk of water damage if you go through a big puddle. Advantages are better performance, simple design and leaves more room for FMIC piping.
A Pod or panel filter in a box with a snorkel is a very good compromise. You can get up to all the performance of a in guard pod but with more advantages. Its easier to replace or clean the filter. And you don't have to worry about water unless your doing a river crossing. Disadvantages are: Unless you can make the box yourself or go Polar style, a custom sealed box for a Pod filter can be expensive but an OEM box with a panel is free. And obviously having a big box in the engine bay can make it difficult sometimes when it comes to FMIC piping. most of the time a bolt on FMIC kit means losing the OEM box and using a pod either in-guard or in the engine bay. A pod in the engine bay is a waste of time. All other things being equal, you'll get worse performance sucking in hot engine bay air. this is especially bad if you have a TMIC and its summer. high intake temps can cause pinging until you get enough airflow over the TMIC to cool the hot charge air. Some people are stuck with this because of FMIC piping routes, but then with a FMIC most of the heat will be taken away pretty quickly.

K&N are oiled filters. Unless you are very careful with the oil application, generally oiled filters don't mix very well with Subaru AFMs. Have a look at Apexi Panel Filters, its a dry type filter and wont mess with the AFM.

I've been running a K/N Pod on the end of my APS CAI for 6+ months now .. Not one single hiccup.
MY01 GDB EJ205 It's the GC8's which have a more sensitive AFM to oiled filters. |

In my impreza i have done all methods k&n panel , engine bay pod , pod in the air box with some flexible running in the guard sucking in cool air from the front, pod in the guard and they all have problems filters get dirty really quick water ect ect I am now running a pod in a custom aluminum air box that is fully insulated in 12 mm Armour flex that is sucking air straight through the guard seems to be working pretty good car seems to have a little bit more power and is using less fuel but i see how it goes in summer
Oh and if you are wondering why i have tried all these different methods well the answer is easy Its a Na ej18 and i need all the power i can get |
