It defiantley doesnt prolong the life of your turbo. That and it puts MASS amounts of back pressure on your exhaust id assume which is why it'd shoot flames, because of the unused fuel and high compression.

Back pressure is the result of the flames giving expanding gasses, not vice versa.

Antilag just injects a bit of fuel just before the turbo so that the expanding gasses keep it spooled up. The fuel is still buring through the turbo and the whole way out the exhaust so flames come out as a result.
