The Silver 08 WRX from the latest Motor magazine is here in Perth as well.

Saw it with NSW number plates here in N. Perth last night.
A greying 45+ gentleman driving.

The thing is as quiet as. Boxster burble completely eliminted from a drive by.
It still looks plain as and frankly boring. Bugger all road presence.

Rear end is still horribly tacky too.

I wouldn't go past a 2006 WRX, not that they weren't family friendly but they just look the part and had the performance.

Last performance WRX? The new one is quicker than the outgoing model!!!

Also, an older model is an older model..it wont hold its value better, its not a collectable item!!

Question

If you want a raw Turbo charged go kart that looks aggressive, still has that turbo kick and handles half decent once suspension mods are done get a 99/00 STi. Road noise, vibration and comfort are secondary concerns.

However if you want a car the wife can drive with the kids that comes with minimal turbo lag, a good torque band and great handling with a quality ride on Oz roads then buy the 08 WRX. Its all about refinement, handling, comfort and especially safety. We seem to ignore that important point.
I'm surprised Subaru do not have a wider selection of brighter WRX colours that would appeal to a broader market.

The problem most of us are having with the 08 WRX is its gone too soft and been refined down to the point that its now bland and even blends in with the crowd. Even if it still goes like stink and handles better with the safety net of VDC.
Where's the element of danger gone. The sense of brooding menace. The ram-raiding newsbulletins and footage of it outrunning the police. Dare i say it its even become politically and enviromentally correct. Goddam Liberal conservatives!!!

The WRX name appears to have been sold out by Subaru all in the name of mass marketing to a wider audience. It really should have been called the S-GT as it is in Japan. My bet is most of us would not have been too upset if it was called the S-GT, even with its bland looks and softer focus.

IMHO the WRX name should have been applied exclusivly to the STi only as it will still retain some of that raw WRX rally inspired ethos that we have grown to love. Subaru will really have to produce something rather special to prevent some current WRX/STi owners defecting to the opposition. Such has been the shellshock!!!

I would want paddleshift, DCCD user switchable mapping, launch control and water / methanol injection standard please before I consider upgrading to a 08 WRX STi
