Joe already has a gear shifter. It's not my thing, but he loves it:

I run the 330mm momo wheel. Love it. One thing to keep in mind is that up until quite recently it was hard to find a boss that allowed you to keep the pins on the airbag ring on the late models. You obviously dont need it for the airbag but you need it for the self cancelling on the indicators. I got the momo boss which I am led to believe is the only one that keeps the pins.

I think i know the wires you are talking about, they sound like airbag wiring. I have a full wiring harness from a 98 WRX that had no airbags from factory and it does not have the wiring for airbags in it. It kinda sound like yours might have had an airbag when it was new...

Sweet mate, thanks for the help. Do you have any shots? Is the wheel thinner than a stock Momo airbag one? Is yours suede?

as far as I know, traffic officers won't get you for a normal wheel vs airbag one. However if you go through the pits after being yellowed for something else, if the person checking the car knows their wrx's - he'll pick out the fact that its meant to have an airbag and it could be an issue.
Something else i'd think about would be the position you'd have to take against the insurance company, incase you have an accident and you're seriously injured - they could investigate that an airbag should have been fitted and deployed during the crash, yet the car has had that taken away - this again could be an issue.

perhaps replacing the stock airbag steering wheel with another airbag wheel by Momo would be better?

its not a case of "could be an issue" its pretty black and white, your insurance WILL be void
