I recommend the Kia Rio Sport of about 2001. It was a cheapie STi look-alike.
“Motor’ did a comparison test of this car at $15000 new v. an STi at $55000 new. On value for money, it was the STi. If you only had $15000, they thought you should rather get a bike. But that opinion may not allow for your taste! The car came in bright blue with gold imitation alloys. To be honest I have not actually seen one, well I think I did once but averted my eyes. They should be available well within your budget and after rego, towing, interior cleanup etc you will have about $9k for repairs and further glitz. This car may not quite have the performance of a 93 or 94 Impreza RX, but with a few $k of repairs and cleanup should give you a year of A to B shopping trolley type motoring.

A early Liberty is no bigger then a GC8 really. At 1240kg without me I'd like to see many GC8's match it actually.

My younger brother is selling a VN commodore with a 5 speed in it for $1000. Not real pretty to look at but goes really well for a commodore.

Yeah exactly! For the year you are looking at, I'm sure there are some grunters that wouldn't be much more expensive than a conversion.

Unless you are doing some crazy conversion, there is no point (economically) swapping a RX to a WRX. Imo it needs to be a special STi variant thats not available or a crazy spec car.
