Default Losing Oil?

Hey everyone,

Im new to wrx's so I have come here to expand my knowledge.

I brought a 2000 WRX about 2 months ago from a car yard, pretty much straight away took it to my local mechanic for a service at 156,000ks, partly due to the fact it was due for it, but also was low on oil, coolant etc.

Now about 2000ks from the service it appears the afm is packing it in, but i just checked the oil dipstick and there is pretty much no oil on/in it, only a little bit below the 'Low' mark, now i am no expert, but this cant be good?

My question is, what could be the problem? should i just top it up? and see how it goes? or go straight to my mechanic?

Cheers,

top it up and see if it does it again. Note how long it takes. note if there are any leaks appearing below the car. when your driving check your rear mirror when you floor it from coasting etc...see if it puts out much smoke, note what colour it is (blue/grey/whitish or black).

Cheers for the quick reply.

There is no noticable leaks anywhere.

Somtimes when giving it abit theres a lilttle bit of a cloud out the back, this is only noticable when driving in low light conditions with some one elses lights up close behind me, Some one did point out a small blueish cloud coming from the exhaust every now and then.

could be turbo seals, also change AFM, 99/00 AFM's are really dodgy it might be working ok but better safe than sorry. (if your car is a 2000 bugeye then dont worry bout the AFM)

Thanks for the advice, I think il change the afm anyway just incase, is this something i can do myself? or take to a mechanic?

Also just went for abit of a drive, gave it abit of stick, nothing to full on but revving it right out, boosting 1st,2nd,3rd,4rth and when i got back there was quite abit of fine black residue over the back of the car, bumper/boot/window etc oil? petrol?

Does the car start straight away or take a fair few turns before firing? Sort of a rrrrrr rrrrow rrrrow rrrrow noise (low comp one cylinder ) At start up is there any smoke? Clean out the BCV lines for starters. What grade oil are you using and have you forgot to mention what mods the car has or had? It's bound to have been modified, of course never raced...

up until a couple of weeks ago it would start straight away, but now it turns over about 2-3 times before starting, a couple of times on start-up it has left a spray of black crap(I guess oil?) on my driveway. its using full synthetic 5w40.

The only mods i know of are exhaust, i am just hoping i didnt end up buying some one elses problem it was pretty cheap i guess.

Please excuse my noobieness but what are the BCV lines?

Boost Control Valve, best to have some one show you. To be honest, I don't have the time this morning to give a comprehensive reply...sorry but maybe some one else could link you some photos?

Oil loss is not good, start by asking your mechanic to do a compression test. The poor starting may be as simple as an Air Flow Meter (AFM) but still fails to explain the Oil loss. Better yet get a Subaru Specialist to look at your car. If you want an honest opinion try Tony Flood Mechanical, U9/ 91-93 Kew St Welshpool 6106 (08) 9472 1800.

The reason I say honest opinion is because some mechanics will try and diagnose a dead motor from a tarrot reading. Telling you that you need an very expensive repair when a can of upper cylinder cleaner ($16) would do the trick, ask "Pinky" what I mean and also "trainwrex".

A WRX can be an expensive habit, consider the $6k for a decent gearbox and another $6K for a motor...BTW your old girl should be using a slightly heavier oil IMHO. Try a fully synth Mobil 5W50 or my favourite, Castrol Edge 10W60. Top the oil and water and monitor it every day until you are comfortable with the amount being lost. Then check only when you fill up with petrol, but every time you fill up.

My tarrot cards are saying broken ring land and or head gasket, I hope I am wrong.

Did u buy it from a subaru car yard? If so, you should still be valid for 3 month stat warranty. If u get a compression check and it all goes to crap, take that to the dealer.
