What an awesome day.
Despite my bitch about some useless lowlife in another thread.
I HAD AN AWESOME DAY. Hobart to Strahan, Along the northern side of Cradle Mountain and across to Launceston ( few little detours for a windier path ) then back to Hobart over the Western Tiers. Just over 800 km in about 9 hours of driving. Heavy rain or damp roads for 3/4 of the day kept Ma and Pa kettle off the road but a lot of the time it was single figure temperature, thinking of potential ice and about 400km of the trip was recommended 15 - 55 kp/h corners. Guess I was pretty happy with the pace. No I kept to sensible maximums ( rarely went over 120 ) but just didn't slow down. STi didn't miss a beat and even returned a respectable 13-14 L/100km. Didn't flog it on the revs to much though cos servo's with 98 are far enough apart to have to be a bit careful. Best part not 1 Plod or camera all day. Correction Best part. 500 odd KM tomorrow up the east coast and across through Scottsdale before getting on the boat to head back to melbourne. P.S. I LOVE RE070. You just can't kill these things.

Tasmania is awesome for driving, and even more awsome when you've got a nice car.
Good to know the police presence is still minimal (It was 6 years ago when I went) Hobart to Strahan is etched into my memory, going down the open cut mine at Queenstown is amazing. |

Yep, Agreed. Tassie is an awesome driving holiday. We went Oct. last year, saw no cops and were able to do some spirited driving without do-gooders taking down your number plate every time the tyres screeched around a bend. Definately take a Turbo Subaru there, it's no place for a renter Camry.

A decent car would be great fun down there.

Tassie has more Subaru per head of population (yes, even counting both heads) than any other state. In general they also buy good tyres, no China/Indian rubbish and most can drive OK from what I've seen.

Was impressed how many would pull over at the first possible spot to let you past. Rarely went more than 1/2 dozen corners stuck behind anyone.
Would be nice if a few would learn the same manners over here. Did Hobart, Swansea, St Marys, St Helen, Scottsdale, Launceston then got slack and did the main drag to Devonport the next day to get to the ferry on time. Blew a gale till St Helens then bucketed down from there to Launceston. ( Wasn't raining cats and dogs. Was raining Elephants & Giraffes ) Surprised how little it knocked off the pace. Great Ocean Road tomorrow morning

Didn't get pulled over ( or see many coppers for that matter ) for the whole holiday.
Guess I just got to wait for a few months and see if any surprises turn up in the post. Pretty sensible around towns so think I'll be right. Great road pity it is getting so bumpy in some spots. Re070's are showing signs of undue wear and tear now
