Due to 95 and 98 RON fuel not being available in W.A. at the moment we would
suggest if you have either, half or a quarter of a tank of 98 RON fuel
currently, you may wish to fill the tank with 91 RON fuel and drive at moderate
speeds without any towing, but keep in mind once you have exceeded the use of
this fuel we suggest not to drive the fuel on a 91 RON fuel or excessive engine
damage may occur, as for additives to be added to the fuel tank Subaru Australia
does not recommend the use of octane enhancing additives.

Hoping this information is of assistance to you and than you for writing to
feedback at Subaru.

This is what I got from Subaru regarding the fuel shortage.
That's interesting... My email from subaru says it is ok to run my MY05 on 91?

Although I only have a WRX and not an STI, if that makes any difference.

Dear John,

Thank you for your recent email to feedback at Subaru,

In relation to your enquiry, relating to the running of your vehicle on a lesser RON it is fine to run on a 91 RON fuel, this is able to be achieved in the short term as long as you do not tow or use heavy acceleration to cause the engine to ping in relation to extreme circumstances until the 95 or 98 RON fuel becomes available.

Hoping this information has been of assistance to you and thank you for writing to feedback at Subaru.

And I got the towing line as well... Must be a heap of WRX's out there with towbars

Mine was regarding a 05 STi.
The STi being in a higher state of tune than the WRX might be the reason for it to be unable to use 91 ron.

So does my WRX...

I just wanted to make sure they weren't telling one person to run 91 while another not to...

But from what I have heard from people at BP, the fuel problem will be resolved soon. All depo's will have fuel by the end of November, which means others will have fuel before that.

Now I just have to drive like a granny for another week

I saw 2 big arse trucks unloading at BP wembley, one of them had the ultimate on the side so they may very well have a fresh supply now? Someone swing past and check.

My MY05 WRX (with a 98 octane only sticker) was serviced yesterday at Osborne Park Subaru. As I walked in to drop the keys of, the person at the service desk was talking on the phone to a MY06 STI owner. Told him its ok to run on 95 so long as you dont hit full throttle or rev out etc etc.

After he hung up, he told me (after questioning him) that even though my car says "98 octane only" its ok to run 95 for the short term without gunning it. he said, the 98 only is more a guideline to be safe. Also, that using 95 or even 91 will *not* void the warranty and the car can handle it in the short term. Obviously, driving for 2 years like that is bad - hence the sticker.

Also said not to add any octane boosters etc

I drove to 5 service stations and then phoned 3 before I found some U98 at Sorrento BP (on Sunday). Filled up a couple of jerrys also.
