Would love to see an S203!
Yeah, same question as the other Alex, Ramon: do you know why they 'styled it down' a bit after the 201? And lovin the oil cooler on the S202

cars that are pumped out of the factory by robots with very little heart and soul. These were put together meticulously in a separate place/assembly area away from the general factory altogether, I will stop here and let Ramon take over as he has all the info and tells it best. The info is going to surprise quite a few people!!! No professional photographers on our weekly met ups just passionate enthusiasts. Thanks again to Graham for giving us his time on a Sunday morning the opportunity to see such a rare piece of Subaru history and for showing us the secret squirrel spec photo location. Oh and cheers to Robbie for another fine dinning experience unearthed and shared this week

Good to catch up with you guys this morning, appologies for making it so early.
Yes - I know the 202 needs some spit and polish, believe it or not I did run a sponge over her. Thanks heaps for the present Ramon, much appreciated as was the advice. (Mujer ningoon problema). Much Luv Matt Photos came out great when you take into account how much planning went into it

i feel we will never have a definitive answer but we can draw on many educated assumptions. its not easy and nor a short answer so bare with me.
if you don't want to know, click the previous back button on your browser...for those that want to follow the rabbit all the way take the blue pill now! if you know the history of the electra one concept car and then its sister car the electraII then this will give you a little background as to why subaru (a fairly conservative car manufacture) went so far outside the square box. i personally feel it was one lash hurrah for the iconic gc8 bodyshape so why not have fun with it? the concept car was perhaps one of the best looking (imho) subaru's ever made. the fact they had the courage to release a road going version still amuses me. after the press of both cars, like with most concept cars, if received well, they hurry them into production hoping to still strike with the car public while the insterst is still there. sadly when the official release came the concept car had turned from chic to fashion foo par. that bodykit with standard ride height (although offering ride height adjustable suspension a first for an STi) and relatively small 16" wheel for the shape of the car forever galvinised an ugly duckling image on the car which has since never recovered. so whoever had put deposits down on a handful of cars (which i believe only 75 got built) well, had no other choice and because they are batch built (in those days.....remember legend goes that the 22b sold out within 48hours). also take into account how expensive the thing was, at just over 4million yen it was miles more expensive than its nearest stablemate. consider a version 6 typeRA V-Limited (which the 201 is the starting platform for) went for a wallet busting 2.4million yen back then so the premium for the first s-series car was GTR money. i feel subaru misjudged the market for the "street racer" appeal from its own client base. you have to remember that the japanese aftermarket body modification subculture is huge. some smart person at subaru thought, hey, there's money to be made here.....how very wrong. how can you market for a solid decade the exploits of the wrx & sti as a "rally" car only then to turn around and say, hey....what about this. it just doesn't happen. for the subsequent releases on the breed they toned it down because of the above and possibly other factors we may never know. im a very proud parent and will speak volumes of how good it is. but like any good parent my judgement is a little on the bias heavy end but there's nothing wrong with that is there! please feel free to read or possible re-read the s-series database, lots of good stuff on there! |
