Even in a normally functioning WRX/STI engine, and moreso with the 2.5, it isn't uncommon to see oil from the engine blown up into the intercooler...it is certainly exacerbated by track or "spirited" driving. This is the reason many people fit oil catch cans. In the case of this guy's (broken) car it may well be due to a piston issue.

Talking

I just had a look in the turbo itself - definitely injecting oil somehow into the intake plenum. The turbo air input is spotless - and the output is quite oily... Could this be the root of all my problems? Broken VF23...? I'd be stoked if it was...
OR somehow, the oil is coming up from the heads, though the valves, through the intake plenum, through some pipes and into the turbo - and going no further...?

Should i pull the turbo to bits? Or is this not advisable?

did you feel for shaft play in the turbo? and since the intake side is spotless like you say, then i doubt your huge issues are a cause of blowby, more than likely it is your turbo

Yeah there's some play... So likely the turbo leaking. Can this be fixed? Or once there's play - you need to replace the whole thing? I'm relieved that its not the heads... :-)

Anyone have a spare vf23 for sale?

Not aš yet... Į spoke to a turbo specialist in brisbane today, and He explained to me how a very extreme case of engine blow by COULD result įn the turbo seals leaking oil. So į still need to do a compression test tomorrow, to find out whos really cooked - engine or turbo. Please please be turbo!!!

hello again!

so after some deliberation, i've finally gotten a compression tester (been busy moving into my new house... which, incidentally, is awesome)

how on earth am i supposed to easily remove the spark plugs? Does it require multiple universal socket joints and extensions?

i pulled the turbo to bits as much as possible too; and there seems to be a lot of oil surrounding the bearing in the compressor housing... and the spindle bitty do dah thingo makes an occasional metallic rubbing noise when i spin it about with my hands... potential signs of a boned turbo?

Cheers for all the help guys.

ps the oil doesn't appear to be chocmilk coloured and is free of coolant... please no head damage :/

Thumbs down epic engine fail

So... completed the compression testing just then spark plugs weren't that difficult to get to, once you remove the washer bottle and pod filter/AFM...

Results as follows (anti-clockwise from top left): 150, 140, 5, 5.

Prognosis: fcuked pretty certain the bank of heads on the RHS are marmalade :'-(

I'm guessing the next thing to do, is engine removal. Amrite? Oh and invest in a torque wrench and a box of tissues.
