Thumbs up Locusts didnt kill my99... Dodgy fuel did :D

So į thought id start a new thread since į found out what really happend to my Wrx when į crossed the nullaboor. Į finally got my ej207 open... It wasnt a head gasket; būt rather a dodgy petrol station, somewhere in woop woop, substituting their 98 octane fuel with regular/dirty unleaded. This caused non simultaneous ignition within the cylinders => two separate flame fronts => shockwaves = fcuked piston rings. In fact one of the pistons has actually had a large chunk of it burnt away. I'll upload some pics when į get home.

Tl;dr byo fuel when crossing the nullaboor

i'm currently fitting some wiseco forged pistons (.5mm oversize) and some cosworth main + big end bearings. Should be finished soon!

I'll attach a pic of the car just incase ppl have forgotten the previous thread

i bet the hot air didnt help with the poor fuel quality too!

shame to see a 207 hammered to death like that.

Question - A few people would be rather interested in the brand and exact location of this woop woop petrol station.
Hint - on long trips when you need to use remote fuel stops carry a bottle of octane boost
Fact - octane rating deteriorates over time, I have been told petrol is ok for at least 6 months.

The 98 may sit in the tanks for a long time due to the lower turnover. You may be better off with the 95 and adding a booster if needed.

would the lower ron fuel still damage the engine if it was running off boost most the time of these big trips??

hmm this is interesting about octane count decreasing over time... Perhaps this could be put down to evaporation/poor storage. In a completely closed system, the chemical composition/RON should technically stay the same... Haha į guess this is the dodgy fuel storage on the nullaboor though - there's probably n-heptene somehow seeping into the tanks.

Think i'll bring some booster NeXT time

It seems so... Although į cant honestly say that į wasnt under boost At every opportunity to accelerate...

Oh and į forgot to mention... Į don't really know where the culprit petrol station was. Somewhere west of wagga wagga and į imagine. Įf į knew į would be commisioning a fuel test AND invoicing them for the consequent damages.
