Default twitchy at the track

Hey guys, I've started getting serious about track work and setup however my car is struggling to get power down being very twitchy on the track.

car:
02 AUDM STi

setup:

tein SS (fulcrum spec)
stock sways
kumho ku31 235/45ZR17 on stock wheels (street tyres)

+0.3mm toe at the front
-1.5 camber front
0 toe at the rear
-1 camber at the rear

what would everyone suggest to fix this ? (bare in mind at this point in time my car is very much a street car and driven daily hence the elcheapo tyres)

cheers

Wesley

I had an 02 STi and I was running -2°33' camber on the front with all stock struts, whiteline 'flatouts' and stock camber bolts. I think I had about -1° at the rear too.

Changing your sway bars to a 24mm option on the front and maybe a 22mm on the rear I think is the usual setup, would help, and then I'd look at strut braces, H-braces etc.

How do you mean you are struggling to get power down? How much power are you making, is the car mainly understeering?

24mm rear and 22mm front is the way Kym. Takes away the understeer. Can make it more oversteery though. Might want to be wary of that.

Thicker sway bars front and rear with alloy links on the rear, 24mm and 22mm is a decent combo. Also if your coilovers have bump and rebound adjustment I'd look at jacking the car up a little bit and softening your settings bit by bit until you find something that works a bit better. Lowered cars look awesome but usually don't handle any better for it.

After that, buy another set of rims dedicated to track work and fit some really good rubber on them. You can get street legal semi slicks that are fantastic for track work so you can change your wheels over in the comfort of your own garage/carport and drive to the track and back (hopefully!!). That'll definitely improve your times for a start.

+1 for bigger sway on the rear.

Adj sways are great also, as if you wish to change the bias (over/understeer), it is easy to...

Good tyres are a must, will give you much more confidence. Bridgestone RE001's are my fav...

+1 for swaybars, links, tyres.

I run a similiar setup to Joe, (HSD coilovers and the whiteline catalogue), and am very very happy with things now. Took a vehicle (02 Sti) that had bad understeer, (you didnt even need to pushing 100%), to a vehicle thats neutral to slight oversteer bias. (Obviously 'ideal' alignment/toe/castor settings vary person to person too).

Noting you already have the Superstreets, add:

- 22mm front swaybar.
- Spherical end links to suit.
- 24mm rear swaybar. I went blade adjust for both, but you can buy the cheaper ones.
- Heavy duty 'gold' c-links for the rear.
- The XHD chassis mounts.
- An ALK, (either street or race, noting you said you want to track it, and which one depends on your level of comfort/NVH).
- Roll centre adjust kit.
- Additional underbody/in car bracing as required.

If it still doesnt handle then... Get a new driver...

Brent.

adjust the wheel alignment

front camber -3, max caster

front toe to 0

rear camber is good at -1

rear toe to 1mm toe in total (0.5mm per side).

fit adjustable rear anti roll bar with heavy duty links, don't worry about a front one at this stage.

get some better tyres, toyo r888's are a good choice, they seem to take more heatcycles than some of the others before they "go off"

what type of track work are you doing?

barbs?, skidpan?, hillclimbs?

vastly different set ups are required for different events and driving styles.

if you give us a better idea of what events you are wanting to do, and some better feedback on what the car is or isn't doing it will be easier to give you advice

Define 'twitchy at the track'.

Understeers/oversteers/doesn't change direction like you want/etc etc?

Alignment as above will help.

Also how low is the car? If its scraping along the alignment geometries will be out causing your car to roll even more.
