Default Bike rack

My first foray into the world of cars and bikes. What is the best way of attaching a bike (or two) to a WRX hatch? I have seen bikes on roof racks so I will need to buy both the roof racks and coupling for the bikes and I have seen bikes attached to the back of cars via some kind of hook.

Not yet and I'm guessing you're going to say I need one.

3 options you can look at.
1) get a tow bar installed and the appropriate tow bar bike mount
Tow bar - $809 (not including up piece/bike mount)
2) get the roof racks and the appropriate bike mount
Roof cross bars - $361.50 & either the fork mount or the upright mount - $235 (both mounts are the same price)
3) open hatch, fold seats down and wiggle a bike in (might need to fold/move the front seat a bit or remove the front wheel of the bike)
nothing!
I never got around to trying to move my bike in my old hatch, didn't want to risk damaging the paint work or roughing up the interior.

I'm possibly looking at getting the roof rack and bike mount early in the new year if I can justify it.

Edit: Prices added(rrp).

I've done (3) and had to be extremely careful so much that I was breaking into a sweat. Would have kicked myself if I had marked the car. I think (2) is likely to be troublesome with height and car ports/garages when I've forgotten the bike is on top. Option (1) looks the best. I guess tow bars can be fitted by anyone in the trade and not limited to Subaru?

We have towbars on the sedan and hatch. The towbar bike rack option is perfect - we have four bikes on ours, and while it bounces a lot we've managed to get to Dunsborough and back several times without losing everything.

Could have also put a blanket down to make sure you don't mark anything.

Not exactly sure on this, but you could try and ringing up Subaru and see if they are nice enough to do a better price (cost quoted includes installation as well).

You probably could get the tow bar installed else where, but if the dealer does it and screws something up, they should be liable to replace/fix the damage.

Are all bike racks the same and will they fit all tow bars? Did the bikes ever scratch the paintwork?
