they are told/taught to aim at number plates and headlights (black cars are also an advantage-being less reflective than white, matt black is best he he) thats why, (not promoting them or anything) but when you mount the boxes for your laser scrambler/jammers, you put them either side of the number plate, front and back. my 2c anyways

heh, what do you do when they pull you over because the radar couldn't get a lock on you?

You hope they don't find the jammer!

Lol, you keep telling yourself that. It's all about what will reflect the best, not the paint colour. Big flat highly reflective numberplate or mirrored headlight area vs curved bodywork... Colour doesn't come into it.

For those saying laser jammers are highly illegal... Why? You are just emitting light which isn't on a restricted frequency. Or is it not the laser jammer that is illegal, just the perverting the course of justice bit?

I've pinged tens of thousands of cars with laser in my time; the lighter and brighter colours are definitely more reflective than the darker ones. I got used to knowing how far away a car could be, based on colour, before guaranteeing to get a reading 1st time so as not to alert drivers with detectors until too late (only takes a third of a second to get a reading). Eg, white/silver cars around 500M, but black & dark cars 350M.

As for jammers, there is something in the Telecommunications Act. It was a long time ago so can't quote you the section... even before the 1st of its type, the Blazer radar/laser jammer appeared in the mid 90's ex USA, they were already illegal.

Weird, I wouldn't have thought it would be a 150m difference based on light/dark colour.

Given you would be pointing it at the numberplate, why would the car colour change your distance?

I would have thought car shape, cleanliness, amount of chrome etc would play more of a role in reflection than if you have a white or black car.

As for the law thing, I know how radar jammers are illegal, but there is nothing in the telecommunications act for lasers (afaik). If there was, you'd have to have a license to operate a torch. I know you will get your ass reamed for having them, just trying to work out under which law to give factual backup.

Radar jammers do not work. There is nothing on the market that will actually jam speed radar. There used to be some hand-built units (called the Scorpion Ka-Ultimate or something like that) that had some success but the guy in the US that was building them got a cease and desist from the FCC. No, I never saw one myself.

As for the colour of cars, this is a minor factor when it comes to range. You only need the smallest amount of reflective surface to get a reading off a vehicle. The fact we have a front number plate is enough to get a reading regardless of what colour the car is (never mind the headlights, fogs, indicators, etc)

If you had a very sleek profile car, with no front number plate, pop-up headlights, and no front facing indicators / fogs etc, no chrome grill, THEN the colour of the car will play more of an effect on the range a lidar can target a vehicle.
