Default Noob questions for a 05/06 STI

Hey guys

I'm considering grabbing a 05/06 sti. I had a bit of a look around the forums but couldn't find exactly what I was looking for. Basically the car will be daily driven and will only get minimal mods (TBE, tune, bracing etc). Won't be looking at stuff like bigger turbo or external gate etc.

My question is what approximate power will an 05/06 sti make with these minimal kind of mods and whats the reliability? Looking at picking up one with around 50,000kms on it and holding onto it for quite a while.

Cheers

I've got a TBE, fuel pump and ECUTEK tune on my MY06 STI. On the Maximum Motorsport Dyno it made 199.4kw on 18 PSI. The car is used a daily driver and I've found it reliable, haven''t run in to any problems yet (touch wood).

Oh I didn't know that.. I want to get a new as car as possible but I don't like the hatch generation and the latest ones so the newest ones apart from those were the 05-07 ones. Differences between 2005 to 2007?

I believe the 05 was the EJ207 and the 06 was the EJ257.
207 is normally said to be the stronger engine and can handle a lot more punishment than the 257 can without having to modify/re-enforce the block of the 257.

Quote:
The Ej257 is built from the same design as the EJ207 block, but sacrifices cylinder wall thickness and coolant chamber volume in order to achieve more displacement.

While this produces more low end torque, it lowers cooling capacity and cylinder strength.

Very true the Aussie version comes standard with forged internals and can run big power safely while the 06 has some issues if you push too much boost through it, but I beleive that's well past the power point that you will be looking for, at 200kw it should be fine as R3X said......

If you do want to go to a bigger turbo in the future as you will prob get the bug of chasing more power, then defintly go the 05

Do a search for more info

2005 wrx

2006/2007 wrx

if you are only doing mild mods, the my06 would be much better! It has more displacement which means more torque for day to day driving. If you're not getting an STi, the benifits of the smaller engine won't be there. Forged pistons and rods only come in the STi. The wrx has the weaker rods and pistons that are about equal to that in the 06.

would definitely only be going an sti.. 05-07 is in my price range but if the 05 is stronger in the long run I may lean towards it. I say i'm only going to do mild mods since its my daily driver but yeh hmmm. Thanks for the advice guys, i shall have a think on this as I'm also looking at other cars too Cheers!

Only 99-02 STI had proper forged pistons, 2.5L engines will burn more oil than a 2L but that is no big issue, the 2.5L is generally reliable with proper maintenance up to around 200kw atw but for everyday driving the 2.5L is a very nice car with the extra torque, both engines make similar power, only the torque varys.
