MY11 WRX/STI discussion thread

Hi
Just had a quick question. I have the satnav system in my MY11 wrx, now I did not get the USB component to the system (cost extra) when I bought the car. Now that I am considering the option, is it just a case of plugging it in to the back of the head unit, and it will pick it up straight away? or ?

STIMUL8IN 23-06-2012 01:48 PM

Doesn't the Satnav version come with the USB and component connections under the arm rest in the centre console? For mine, I got the Apple iPhone accessory cable which uses USB for power and the component cables for video output. Then just plug it in under the arm rest and away you go? If you've not got the USB and component connections, might be a bit trickier?

ImPreSiV 23-06-2012 01:51 PM

WRX Premium varied from the STI. Jamie, I believe yours is the same as mine

T R3X 23-06-2012 03:47 PM

No idea, but if you're looking at only using it for iphone, easy solution! I've got a charging cord connected to the cigarette lighter inside the centre console and plugged the audio cables into their respective spots with an AUX cable. Works perfectly for me, plug, play and charge.

Hey mate dunno if this helps

That's how I've got mine too. I drilled a hole in the bottom of the console and ran the cable through past the gear lever, into the back of the glove box, then it pokes out through the glove box lid and into my custom made iPhone cradle.

huggy_b 23-06-2012 04:31 PM

Does the MY11 headunit bluetooth stream? I just do that in mine, heaps easier.....

b32 23-06-2012 04:36 PM

Stock one does

sat nav one doesn't

huggy_b 23-06-2012 04:41 PM

sucks to be sat nav! LOL

b32 23-06-2012 06:08 PM

Ill take the sat nav over blutooth music :)

ImPreSiV 23-06-2012 07:07 PM

Who needs sat nav? I grew up in Perth, I know where I'm going!

mitchwnz 23-06-2012 07:27 PM

Ummm I use it constantly. Mostly for work as I'm a sales manager.

I must say though I chose not to get the factory unit as you lose the USB/iPhone integration.

Didnt you buy one Kym?

Drewski 24-06-2012 03:48 AM

@Jamie is the USB stock? I don't remember seeing it on mine... Got me curious now and I can't check because I am on my honeymoon! Man I miss my car :(

wrxr2d2 24-06-2012 07:49 AM

I have the same in my car as Jamie. I bought a cig charger and av cable and connect my iPhone to it. I would be interested in knowing if I could connect a USB connection as you can get from eBay, along with the arm rest extension.

STIMUL8IN 24-06-2012 09:56 AM
@Jamie is the USB stock?...I am on my honeymoon! Man I miss my car
No, I got one of those 12v to USB adapters, about $15 from car store, or $5 from eBay if you can be bothered waiting :)

Honeymoon eh? I'd have taken the car and left the wife at home ;)

Edit - Here's my setup:

Jamie, where did you get the phone holder from? And how secure is it? I hate the flimsy crap ones that exist.

Your console setup is different to mine. Will post up the standard WRX one

Edit: Attachment added. 12v which is hooked up to a 240v inverter, USB which has iPhone charger (don't use this to play music, only to charge - streams music via Bluetooth, but you can play music via the USB too) and AUX in

Kato 24-06-2012 11:34 AM

+1 on phone holder please!

Looks like a Ram mount - http://www.ram-mount.com.au/ - This is the reseller Australian site. Awesome mounts, I use them for Ike camera/gps.

Yep, that's the one Drewski.

I have the same one on the bike too, and even when I fell off the bike a few months ago, the phone stayed in the cradle, so suffice to say, they're very sturdy!

I made the part that goes in behind the stereo facia though. That's just a pice of galv plate, cut and bent to shape, then a couple holes with some small self tappers into the side of the return behind the facia - then carbon wrap FTW :p Cradle doesn't move a jot and I can put the phone in and out one handed (without having to brace the cradle with my other hand).

ImPreSiV 24-06-2012 04:50 PM

thats what I want. my phone has a silicon case on it, and is an iPhone 4s... will it fit with the cover?

Nup, phone needs to be naked. It's a tight fit.

ImPreSiV 24-06-2012 06:43 PM

Has it damaged the phone at all?

ImPreSiV 24-06-2012 09:23 PM

should I rename this thread to "MY11 discussion thread" so we MY11 owners can discuss different bits and pieces about our cars? Chris??
Has it damaged the phone at all?
Don't think so. Mine is a fairly old 3GS and I don't like covers, so it's a bit scratched, but I don't think the cradle has done any of it. You're welcome to have a good look at the set up next time we meet.

Thanks for the info guys about the satnav/USB :)

Drewski 25-06-2012 06:19 AM

Just a quick question, seeing it is now a MY11 discussion.
The other day I had left the STi in I Mode, well as I call it Little L mode (lisa or Loser Mode) and when I put my foot down a little triangle came up on the dash. I tried it a couple of times and it did it again. Once I put it into Sports Sharp it went away.
This happened around the 3500 - 4500 rpm range.
Anyone have any idea what this is.
Thanks in advance.

mitchwnz 25-06-2012 01:22 PM

I believe this is a shift light/suggestion for maximum economy :p Or a "transmission shift up indicator".

Cheers thanks for that. I am glad I ignored it then.

I've got a set on the way from Japan for $57, will go on the next car. :)

huggy_b 19-07-2012 09:17 PM

They dont make a WRX version and I dont wanna put STi on my car....pity, cos they look good.

I'll probably remove mine and get them vinyl wrapped when I get the roof done.

b32 23-07-2012 12:19 PM

I agree they look great but also cant put STI on my wrx.

Anyone know a cheap place to get the standard wrx ones? Or know the spare part number for them?

Soksta 23-07-2012 12:27 PM

There is a guide posted on nasioc by someone who took them apart and painted them.
Looked pretty dam good too!

Yeah that's pretty much what I want to do, paint them, but would rather have a separate set to do it with in case i balls it up and so I can take my time.
