Whining coming from rear of car
Hi guys I have a 2002wrx hatch and I am getting a whine coming from the rear of the car. It usually starts when the car slows down, not so much speeding up and does not happen when the clutch is in. I have had the diff oil changed and still same. I got the diff mounts which were worn replaced and now although everything feels tighter now, the noise is much louder. I was thinking maybe the diff center is the cause and the new mounts are are making it louder
Anyone had this problem? And who would you recommend to fix it North of the river? |

Let the misses out of the boot.
Only joking, I am not to sure what it is but north of the river try Maximum Motorsport, south try STechnic. Both are good and will help straight away.

with my bug whine in the rear were the bearings in the hubs but could be you rear diff or hubs or better still take it to someone who knows subaru and see what they think

You have a kitchen in your boot ? :P
I had a noise like that in my other subi and it was something to do with the wind up building up, due to wheels not all going at the same time??? sorry I don't know the technical terms !

Wheel bearings usually rumble (not whine) and don't change pitch when you change from accelleration to decelleration.
I suspect from your description that the likely cause is the rear crownwheel and pinion. These are inside the final drive assembly. (often called a rear diff although not technically correct) The cheapest and possibly best solution is to replace the assembly with another from a similar model that doesn't whine. Beware that there are various ratios (sedan and hatch are often different) and various shaft configurations. Best to seek help from a workshop that know Subaru. |
