MY05 STI or EVO 8 MR/9
I know this is a Rex forum, but I know that there are a few EVO owners on here too.
I'm looking at getting an MY05 STI or an EVO 8MR or an EVO 9. Can't decide. From what I've read the EVO's have it over the MY05 STI, but on the other hand , personally, the EVO's sound like crap compared to the STI. They all have 6 speeds, Brembo's and I believe they have the DCCD's. So which is the one to get? Are they that close that it doesn't matter? I intend to do club/track days with it, but nothing competitive. Cheers Zombee :) |
Curious to know why you sold your 06 just to potentially get back in an 05?
Stronger engine? As for the original question, if you aren't going to be participating in competitive motorsport, perhaps go for the one with cheaper running costs, which i assume would be the suby? |
best bet dude, knowing that they are pretty comparable and on par....drive both and you decide what you prefer as comfortableand like to drive. Evo will be easier to pull the head apart and modify if thats your plans for serious HP cams etc... generally just easier to work on. I have a wexxy and love it...but after driving my mates evo7 o_0 wowee's LOL, and if i was going to get one...id go the evo8 MR :)
goodluck mate ps- im pretty sure all evo's are forged 2l and cast iron block - smash the psi into it :P |
a different drive is always nice. personally the Evo feels like a narrow car compared to the subies.
if you want to stick to your comfort zone, go Sti. otherwise, 8mr |
maybe add a poll to the thread
|
I love subaru's and probably wouldn't get an evo for that reason, however that is nothing against them and it would be nice to drive round in something that probably isn't so common on the street, so I think the evo has it in that department.
however I did have a standard lancer for a work car, and found the driving position terrible... the arm rest was to low on the door, and the top of the door was to high for your arm, was pretty annoying on long trips.. |

Stronger engine?
Two reasons, I bought an HSV Grange after selling the 06 STi for a more family friendly car, but the fact that it was an auto shat me to tears, so I sold it. Second, yes the 2L is a stronger engine :D
maybe add a poll to the thread
Good idea, poll added. |
The 9's have a better turbo and mivec which has better potential for power of an 8 MR.
Also, they were ADM, so no worries with imports with sketchy history (im aware the 8mr were ADM also, but they were a lot rarer) |
You should try to get behind the wheel on each one of them and feel for what really suits you the most. You may get quite a bias opinion from the majority on here.
|
Or why not add to the poll GC8 and TME 6.5 as its to be a track/fun hack.
|
I know they're much older and have the potential to be more problematic and less reliable but if I was going to get an Evo it would be a 5 or a 6.5 TME. The Evo V has always been my favourite shape. From 7 - 9, in my opinion, they got the shape all wrong and the Evo didn't look good again until the 10. So, for me, unless it was a mint Evo V or VI.5 I'd go the scooby.

ps- im pretty sure all evo's are forged 2l and cast iron block - smash the psi into it :P
no not forged pistons. ive had an evo 6 & driven stockish evo 7,8,9's a fair bit & i would take the sti. i prefer the smoothness of the flat four, its sound, the gearshift & ive been surprised at how spritely my stock GD rex is. |
Franz may be worth while talking to

I'll just leave this here:

evo 9 ftw
|
I think it's a proven fact that Evo's would beat the STI on a track (talking about stock cars) because of all the techno gadgets under the Evo's bonnet.
I have no idea about maintenance cost on the Evo's so can't chime in about running costs. However, in the words of Jeremy Clarkson, Evos are the better cars on track but STIs are better to live with everyday. p.s. I was just watching Best Motoring and they mentioned that alot of the extra stuff that's on the 8 MR was carried over to the 9 (like to alloy roof), so 9 is really the better car if costs isn't a concern. |
i obviously dont know for sure, but im betting the sti 6 speed drivetrain is stronger/better than the evo 8MR/9 6 speed.
happy to be proven wrong tho |

oh, my mistake....cast iron block tho yea ?

yep
|
If going by looks, Evo 9 all the way...as much as the peanuts are good, the shape is getting old as balls (flame suit has been prepared)
As for the older Evos...everytime i see a 4/5/6, i immediately start having flashbacks of the early 2000s when every idiot had a CE lancer with evo kit.....yuk. |
Dom, what exactly do you want to achieve?
If mainly a daily driver then go Subaru... |
05 sti definately.
cheaper to maintain |
Remember 6 speeds on the Evo's are actually the weaker box. 5 > 6 in evo world.
Insuring an import 8MR can be an issue if you use mainstream insurers. Whereas a 9 being Aus delivered makes it a lot easier. As mentioned 9 has Mivec out of the box. As for which is faster... Stock for stock there wouldn't be much in a 05STi vs 8MR/9. Advantage for the Evo is they are a twin scroll setup from factory and have FMIC for easier power upgrades. If I didn't have my GC8 project, I'd have a 05 STi. Or a 2008 Evo X 5 speed... :D |
not suprisingly, on the subaru forum, the 05 sti is leading the poll, but I think it is the better option. Stick with what you know. Evo's are a great car, but harder to live with every day IMO than an STI. (turning circle for one :P)
The 05sti is still a great shaped car and can be made to look oh so good! 05 STI for me |

Seeing you have already owned a 06 sti before, i would probably go for an evo. Would be nice to jump into a different machine and learn new things about modding an evo.
05 sti prices are fairly decent 24-27k would most likely get you a nice example. At the end of the day I'm sure if you test drive each of the 3 options you will make up your mind easily. :) |
Evo 9 - easy choice really.
|
Want to go fast. EVO 9
Want to have an involving drive. STI |
Evo hands down.
|
i was looking at an evo9 mr with minimum mods, was racier than the sti, more feedback through wheel, sharper steering, and more powerful when on boost.. but that said, off boost it sounds droney and feels like an excel.. the sti had more bottom end usable power with more displacement and fast spooling turbo and more street friendly suspension setup.. each to there own.. id have an evo as a track car hands down but ill live every day smiling with the sti around town
|
I know its not any of the cars I've listed, but does anyone know the history on this MY00 V6 STI??

EVO 9MR??? Was it a race rally car? Aus never got 9's in MR spec. |
EVO 9MR??? Was it a race rally car?
Aus never got 9's in MR spec.
probably just an EvoIX with a Paceway Mitsubishi Race Tune on it... |
REvolution sticker = 5kw increase. :D

Ohhhhhhh lol!:D |
evo 9 standard model whatever, exhaust suspension n tune.. pretty much lost interest after i drove the sti as the subie had way less k's n was more civil. pwrx sticker -15kw
|
Do you reckon the chance an 06 sti has more bottom end is due to the fact it has an extra 500cc in capacity?
Anyhow, heres an unbiased review 2006 Subaru Impreza WRX STI vs. 2006 Mitsubishi Evo IX - YouTube |

And the newer version of that. |
All depends on your needs.
From someone who has owned both, If its going to be a daily with the odd track work I would go STI. The evo will shit you to tears as a daily, poor turning circle, fixed height seats, shit factory clutches, no cruise unless optioned, povo interior, blah blah blah. If its weekend warrior and track work then the Evo is what you want. Putting up with its faults on the weekends piss easy, doing it everyday is a PIA. |
