avoid H6 outbacks at all cost, the engines are a P.O.S.

just be sure to get a 2.5 litre not a 2.0 litre.

I'm not sure if it is only RX's and ouback's that come in 2.5 though.

Be nice to be able to pack up and go for a trip somewhere without having to fill the back seat with gear too
We had a Gen 3 Outback, I found the 2.5 gutless in manual form and would suggest the 3.0 if you can find one.

5 Speed shift is the worst in any subaru I have owned or driven but can be fixed up with the usual bushes.

Don't get an auto 2.5 you will shoot yourself.

Boot space is the best ever for depth. We could fit our urban buggy (pram) in length ways from front to back so it left heaps of room for shopping etc.

More depth than the replacment Jeep we got and about the same depth as our Disco 3.

Overall a great wagon let down by an underperforming engine.

However - Gen IV is a huge leap forward in car and I would look that way for a cheaper Gen IV wagon

Gen 3 Lib FTW, I personnally think they are a great looking car, just a little bit agressive.
Another thing to look for, although rare, is the connector to the fuel pump/level sensor assembly overheating and melting. Symptoms are simply not starting intermittently.
I've seen three gen 3's now with that problem, expensive repair as the assembly is $900 odd new.
Dougie's right about heater core issues, they do leak and can block up if the coolant isn't maintained properly, and its very labour intensive to replace them.
I would avoid Gen 3 H6 Outbacks, they have an issue with catalytic convertor failure now they're getting on.
The only way to resolve it is to replace the front exhaust with new, genuine parts, up to $5000 just in parts.
But, good choice of model I say.

Interesting. The ones I and my family members have owned have been amazing. I had zero problems when I owned it and didn't get rid of it until close to 300k.
I found it to be literally unbreakable.
