040 is an internal pump with a pick-up screen on the bottom of the pump. Bosch 044 can be fitted internal or external.
I've personally never seen an 040 installed in a WRX before, because most people go with the 044, 910 or 984, which all have a barbed inlet (and the 044 has a threaded inlet for your own screw-in barb), and people normally adapt the stock fuel pump sock to fit on the end. It can be adapted to be used with a WRX, but you'll have to cut the bottom of the fuel pump assembly off, and mount the pump about 1cm from the bottom of the tank. I had really bad starvation with less than half a tank, when I put the walbro in I also put an old STI pick up on it cos the one supplied was 90 degree & useless but since then I haven't had a problem so .......sock? pump? but no probs now.
