Default Insurance help needed for cars with ECU

howdi all

I am considering buying a moded rex and want to find out about insuring the sucker...I have read the sticky insurance thread many times but want some feedback from you guys with ECU's or ecutek...(declared on policy)
The only insurance companies it appears that insurances a car with "performace" enhancing mods (ecu in particular) is either just cars or shannons. Is this really it?
I have spoken with HBF/RAC/Wesfarmers and they wont touch it. Previous calls to QBE and sgio and they don't cover either..After long discussion with a supervisor at rac they checked with underwriting department and said the ecu is performace enhancing so no good....Shit! performace enhancing is just a nasty side effect of my quest to obtain better fuel economy I told em - but they didn't swallow it!

The excesses and rates on just cars and shannons are too high for me to take so I may just keep my stock 05 wrx but I would prefer to get the modded one!

So any other insurance companies that are ecu friendly?

Thanks fellas! Its appreciated!

Cheers n Beers

Unless your insurance company does a sniff test on your cars tune (and this wont happen), its undetectable...i.e. dont worry about it.

Shannons want $1480 private use....(currently have same model car unmodded and pay$900 for business/private) ,,Just cars was $1400 but the excess is around $1200.
I prefer to have all mods listed and do it properly...would make me spew if had a crash and claim rejected due to unlisted/uncovered ecu... Hard to rip an ecu out from a hospital bed!
Will try and cakk a broker today and see if they can help.

keepo em coming.

cheers n beers

Your a lucky dude...this was about my 3rd call to RAC and I went straight to team leader,...told them the story about some people have ECu's with rac so why can't I....she checked with underwriting dept....and nope ecu = performance enhancing..therefore no can insure....Rac would save me $500 but $1000 on the excess!
