FMIC Questions
Hey all
Was just wondering.... What power output (kwatw) can one reach with a sti top mount, sti scoop and zero sport fins... I wanna know just in case i need a intercooler... hoping to get approx 210kwatw (will a top mount do the job?) Also i have seen some people paint their fmic black...does this effect the flow into the i/c?? Cheers Chris |

dun ppo say painting it black increases heat exchange efficiency? black body radiation? or is it all my imagination and stress from exams?

yep, black is better for heat exchange, but shiny and polished is better for bling...
ohh and yellows too.. :P |

yea, thought so, but if you think about it.. painting it black means you're coating the metal with a layer of paint.. isn't that gonna decrease the rate of heat transfer? since paint is not a good thermal conductor. hm...

i would think that the aluminium colour is better

painting an ic will make it less effective as Shinobiken says, whereas a factory black one is fine...depends on paint.
yes sti top mount will easily handle 200+kw thow if your upgrading turbo larger than a stock sti one you will need a larger top mount or better yet a front mount. |

200+ is the absolute limit of a top mount. JMAX got 200+ atw with his but I don't know of anyone else getting near that with a top mount. I have got 205kw at the hubs @ the wok with a TMIC but that is a-lot easier than 200 on a DD and then everyone is telling me to ditch it with the boost I'm running (1.5Bar)
To make the power you either need to move volumes (big turbo, lowish boost) or smaller turbo and crazy boost. Either way the pressure drop and resistance across the cooler will be signifcant when you are trying to move large volumes and/or high pressure air through it. Most manufacturers quote flow ammounts equating to around 374-400hp @ the fly and pressures around 1.3 to 1.5bar for top mounts. Maybe after that the air becomes turbulent or something and the coolers effectiveness drops off, I'm not too sure..
