I'd be taking this into account if it was me or your stretched budget will be stretched even more if it goes POP!

Obviously I need to take it for a spin and see if the hatch really makes that much of a difference.

Mods will be TBE, Panel filter, coil overs or low springs, Anti lift kit and Tune. <-- best mods IMO.

*Will have full inspection done prior to purchase - Most likely at STechnic as I've been going to them for years.

If this doesn't please me I'll have a look at some 06/07 STi's over the next few weeks.

Cheers for all the help guys!

Have a great Weekend!

Really?

See the internet is full of wonderful stories that tend to suck a lot of people in.

From the 2 technically minded gentlemen that I've talked to over the past 3 days.

One works at a Subaru dealer as a mechanic, doesn't seem to think its that much of a deal and doesn't consider them any worse than the 06/07 WRX's.

The other is Doug from STechnic who I literaly just spoke with. He is a very trustworthy person and admits the exact same thing as my other friend. They can go bang if heavily tuned - but.. no more likely than an 06/07.

He even mentioned that they have a customer with an 08 WRX and upgraded turbo pushing 300hp that thrashes it every day and he hasn't had a problem.

So not to put my hand up and say stop.. but often the net can push some fantastic unicorn crap your way.

Often its best to just pickup the phone and speak to these mechanics to get the real story.

Well, I lost count how many motors Bruce had replaced under warranty on his 08STi - 3 I think was the final number. Eventually he had a gut full and built a motor to his specs.

Unfortunately that car spent more time off the road getting fixed than driven and its modication list was basic - i.e. exhaust, tune, headers, air filter.

In the past 12 months there have also been a couple of 08 STi's mentioned on here that have had, or have required a rebuild, so it's not all just American Forums.

At least you're aware of it/prepared for the slim chance it may happen. Most purchasers probably weren't!

I personally replaced 10-15 motors on 08 sti's and also wrx's whilst I was a technician at subaru, I too would steer clear.
Wrx's did big ends.
Sti's did ring lands.

So far I've test driven:

08 STi Spec -R dead stock - Nice. Fast. Pornographic.
06 STi with 3" exhaust + pod filter - Was also very nice but had a few kms on it - over 150'000 kms
09 WRX - This was a real surprise - I honestly wasn't expecting it to be that good but it was flipping great! All it had was an exhaust + panel filter.

Price wise I'm looking at:

35k for 08 STi
28k for 06 STi
23k for 09 WRX

In my opinion the Price clearly reflects the performance but I've gotta say the 08 STI is winning all hands down.

Value for money - 09 WRX is flipping awesome...

Tough choices ahead. As I said I'm not rushing - my loan is pre approved already.
