Default Where to go for a unusual repair

Hi All

I'm looking for some advice on where to take my WRX which is misbehaving.

First let me explain the problem. First thing in the morning she starts beautiful and purrs like a good WRX should. The problem is if I stop and start the car in a short space of time (like going to the shops), and especially during the warmer weather, she won't restart. It takes several attempts to restart her with pauses to let the "computer" think about it....

My local mechanic "thinks" it is possibly the fuel flow controller in the computer, but Subaru won't answer his questions. The first thing he tried was replacing the fuel pump which didn't make any difference. The onboard computer is not giving any error codes when it does this as we can create the problem very easily. As we live quite a way south of Perth he doesn't have the tools or infrastructure to fix it.

My questions are:
1) Has anyone else had a similar problem? And knows how to fix it
2) Which Perth garage is most likely to be able to fix it (without charging an arm and a leg) and without treating me like a country idiot.

Thanks in advance

Regards
Kevin

It's bound to be the crank angle sensor. The sensor position at the top of the engine makes it susceptible to heat. It deteriorates over time and then fails when hot stopping the car from starting.

A test is to drive it and park it so you can turn the engine over without starting (think bump starting the car with the key in off) then try to start as normal. So, drive, park the car, car won't start, you then bump the engine over as described above, and it then starts. If it starts after the above procedure then it's almost guaranteed to be the crank angle sensor intermittent failure.

Had the issue in an NA Liberty. The sensor costs a fortune ... Was $300 odd a decade odd ago.

could also be the fuel pump control module

best way to rule out either is to swap the parts over with know working ones

also check the ground lead on the manifold is clean & tight, i had a similar problem & that was ll it was, found this out after replacing the crank angle sensor & then the fuel pump control module

It happened twice yesterday. I did as you suggested and it started both times.

Thanks for the help.
