EJ205 Rebuild
Hi guys,
I own a 98 Club spec. It has a 04 EJ205 engine stock 04 ECU and 04 gearbox. Mods: TMIC, TGV detele, exhaust. ..etc Top end was rebuild by a mechanic 20k ago. Pulled the engine out today due to low compression in one cylinder plus blue smoke. and looks like I have done a big end as well. So what is the best options? My tuner suggested EJ207 short block with EJ205 heads, manfold plus tune. But may be over kill. I use it as a daily and travel..etc not after a dyno queen, more after reliability and lonngtivity. Has anyone else got any ideas? Or maybe I should keep the ej205 block? Your thoughts and experience is greatly appreciated. Cheers guys |

+1 for advice of your tuner. That is a common path for most people in the same position. Not too expensive, but you could do it cheaper, but probably more time consuming and effort with regards to fixing your damaged 205.
The 207 is obviously a stronger, better short motor, with the forged rods, pistons, semi-closed deck. There is one from Jarvis Subaru for $3300 i think with a gasket kit. Would recommend attaching a new water and oil pump as well.

Ok, cheers.
Is there any modification that needs to be done to the ej205 heads, manfold or is it as simple as bolting it all together? |

I would listen to your tuner mate, 207 short block with 205 heads is a pretty decent combination especially if your aiming for reliability and still able to pull a decent and enjoyable amount of power.
IMO I wouldn't go back to the 205. I would upgrade to the 207 and like Rich X mentioned you have the forgies with a semi closed deck if you went down the 207 path. Good luck using the Perth-WRX mobile app |

Heads will need to be skimmed plus 272 cams added.

Why 272 cams? Won't the stock WRX cams in WRX heads do the job just fine?

272 cams are not really needed. Put the money into the turbo first in my opinion.

Cams are expensive to do "down the track" (engine out labour) so I can understand wanting to do them while the engine is out. I'm also inclined to agree with Kremer above though...

He was just fucking around with the 272's, but they are awesome, and I would be tempted to drop those in as well :P

These cars are starting to get pretty old. If you plan to keep the car long term, spend the money on the fresh short block as advised.
If you aren't planning on keeping long term, I would drop in another second hand engine on the cheap and just maintain it regularly. |
