GC8B (10/1993-8/1994)
GC8C (9/1994-9/1996)
GC8D (9/1996-9/1997)
GC8E (9/1997-9/1998)
GC8F (9/1998-9/1999)
GC8G (9/1999-9/2000)

Chassis prefix don't lie.........

GC8D (9/1996-9/1997)

The 1997MY WRX now has a power rating of 280 PS (205.9 kW; 276.2 bhp) at 6500 rpm with 33.5 kg·m (329 N·m; 242 lb·ft) at 4000 rpm (280 PS (205.9 kW; 276.2 bhp) at 6500 rpm with 352 N·m 4000 rpm for the wagon version). The car now weighs 1,250 kg (2,756 lb).

GC8E (9/1997-9/1998)

Same spec as MY97 GC8D

GC8F (9/1998-9/1999)

The 1999MY WRX is introduced on September 1998. The power rating remains the same as the previous year's model, but the torque is increased to 34.5 kg·m (338 N·m; 250 lb·ft) at 4000 rpm due to improvements on the engine design (the engine was dubbed as Boxer Phase II engine). The car now has a curb weight of 1,270 kg (2,800 lb). The WRX Type RA receives the same power upgrades and has a weight increase of 20 kg (44 lb) to 1,210 kg (2,668 lb). Gearbox casing change (8 bolt).

GC8G (9/1999-9/2000)

The last version of the WRX is introduced on September 1999. There is no change in the mechanical specifications. Added features are newly-designed alloy wheels, color-coded mirrors and door handles, remote central locking, intermittent wipers with a timer and map lights. Red Mica had replaced Bright Red..

So a 6/98 = MY98 GC8E

Simple check look at the first 7 digits of your cars chassis number, the 7th being the model/year designation i.e JF1GC8*
D = 97
E = 98
F = 99
G = 00

Registration date mean nothing.

The version table given above by Rossco is good – but, the power and torque figures make me think it refers to the UK version STi not base WRX models. As far as I know the release dates apply to both WRX and STi.

O.k just had a look at Fobz's my99 wrx build sheet.
Car WAS built 7/98 (Special order, 555 blue mica).....4 weeks to ship from Japan to Aus.

Deal was signed at the dealership/ vehicle registered (Thurday) 27/08/98

Car was delivered Tueaday, 1/09/98.....(first day of last 1/4 1998)

That would make his one of the first MY99's delivered here officially.

That's in stead with last 1/4 release of next years models...Subaru just rode the wave of their own success by exporting the cars to Aus early to ensure pre ordered cars were supplied on time.

They have not done this for any models prior to or there after the my 99's apparently.

Subaru sales records smashed at the time:

"6 April, 1998

Subaru Australia has created a new sales record selling over 2,000 vehicles in a month for the first time in its 25-year history. The 2,047 units sold in March shatters the company's previous record set in October last year of 1,712 units.

March VFACTS report also confirms Subaru sales have almost doubled from the same time last year. March 1998 sales of 2,047 vehicles compares to the March 1997 figure of 1,066 vehicles. Cumulative YTD sales have also increased by 93% from 2,668 to 5,147.

In addition, there were a host of other records broken during the month. Four states made record sales, and Impreza, Forester and Outback sales also raced ahead of previous figures.

Vehicle No. of vehicles sold
Forester 650 New Record
Impreza 680 New Record
Outback 293 New Record

New state sales records were set in New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria and Western Australia.

The March sales result was also notable for record sales of the rally-bred Subaru Impreza WRX. Figures show 342 Impreza WRX models were sold in Australia last month."
