Another newby
Hi guys,
to begin with I'm Todd, just wanted to post about my new project, Its a 1997 GC8 WRX STi Impreza, imported from japan under the race/rally import regs. Of what ive been told it is a V4, and I'll be setting it up for Tarmac Rally in the M2 class, so if anyone has any guidance or help for me in regards to this type of racing it will be greatly appreciated. Roll cage will be a BOND ROLL BARS type and will be going to AllStar garage for computer and tuning. The Sti is completely stock atm but will be getting modified to suit the class. here are some updated pictures of it, sorry if the quality is poor, they were taken on my iphone; Last edited by TarmacSTi; 22-06-2011 at 02:58 PM. |

Todd,
Welcome. I have a very similar car to you and went down this same road a few years ago. Before you start spending a silly amount of money building the car (as I did) you really need to decide a) what events you want to do and b) at what level you want to compete. I.e. do you want to do targa west or targa tas or are you happy doing the speed event series / dutton rally / twilight sprints. The reason I ask is that effectively there are two governing bodies at war at the moment. You have Cams which runs Targa West and then you have AASA which basically runs all of the stuff on the east coast. i.e. Targa High Country / Targa Tas etc. The crux of it is that the two bodies have two different sets of rules and whilst there were a few concessions for Targa West this year (read you could run a 3" exhaust this year) if you build a car to the full regs of AASA it will not comply with CAMS. If you build a car to the full extent of CAMS it will not be competitive with the AASA cars. If you build a car somewhere in the middle it will not be competitive at either. Mind you none of this matters if you are happy running midfield. As a ballpark figure whatever you spend on the car you need to budget the same each year to campaign it. Competitive tarmac rallying is not a cheap exercise. As a ballpark for someone living in WA and wanting to be somewhere near the front you can bank on the following events costing the following assuming you dont bend anything. Bathurst 12 hour is a $100k Targa West will cost you $20k Targa Tas will cost you $40k + AASA try and charge and entry fee that equates to $10 per competitive k. I.e. Targa High country a couple of weeks ago was about 200 km's so the entry fee is $2k. Targa West is a shit load more expensive. Mid 200 k's competitive and the entry fee is just over $7k. Anyways having said all that I am about to build a new car and piss more money into the wind. If you want to come and have a look at my car and get some ideas and set a realistic budget give me a buzz. Brendon

Thanks for the reply's guys, I wasn't expecting as much positive info like this.
Cost really isn't a factor atm, the only reason I didn't want to go all out and buy a full prepped new car is the realization that I am the worlds best driver and if something goes wrong I'll most likely write off the car. More of a learning exercise, and I have a habit of 'pissing money into the wind' aswell, but it's sport like this that brings a smile to my face I'll be setting it up for cams specs and then when the time comes that I want to race in targa Tasmania (dream and goal of mine) I'll get a car build specifically for that. Once again thanks for the feedback and I'll be frequenting this forum often now Todd |

I dont know if you have sorted out how much you want to spend but you would be much better off buying an already sorted car. i.e. let someone else spend all the money. Even to the point of keeping yours for spare parts.
Just a thought. Brendon

I like the fact that I bought the car as it is and I'm building it up, sorting all the stuff myself to keep busy, plus with the car being bought for $8000 I find it's a cheap car to begin with. And with the M2 class limiting the modifications it still keeps it very cheap. When I was racing boats, my motor alone cost me $40,000 so to come into something like this is a more fun and cheaper sport |
