Default 02 Bugeye WRX

Hello,

My name's Mike, thought I'd introduce myself and say thanks for the great forum. It helps to know that potential support is out there in Perth, after my last car (a Saab 9-3 Aero) provoked horror and mystified expressions among any mechanic I spoke to about it. Anyway, I just got my first WRX a few weeks ago, an 02 Bugeye with 13100kms on the clock, and was hoping some of you guys can help with some info about what is right/wrong with it.

I took it to Albany at the weekend for its first proper run out, which is around 420km from my home. I had a few 'foot to the floor' overtaking spells but spent most of the trip at 110-120kmh, and didn't have any fast getaways from lights etc. My WRX absolutely guzzled fuel, going from a full tank to just under quarter full, which I reckon would be around 55 litres. That's over 13 litres/100km, which is pretty disappointing for a 2.0 car. I might have expected that around town, but on a run....? Is that kind of fuel consumption normal?

Pickup is little short of hopeless below 3000rpm. Once the turbo kicks in, things start to liven up. Again, is this normal?

In second gear, if I come off the gas pedal it makes a fairly noticeable whinig sound. It's not really bad, but it's definitely noisier than other gears. Normal?

Cheers

Mike

This should give you an idea on the fuel economy of other owners. Fuel Consumption

G'day mate,

To measure your consumption correctly you need to record your km's accurately and then refill your tank - record the litres and then do the math. Your guesstimation is not a fair reflection on the cars economy.

By the way your speed of 110-120 could possibly cause the car to use a fair bit of extra fuel. My territory diesel on the highway registers very good fuel economy at 100km/h, but at 110 km/h the consumption climbs more than 1L/100, ie - more than 10%.

Good luck pics please!

Cheers.

Welcome mate!

Has the car got any mods? Some can cause your fuel economy and response go out the window. I've found mine's pretty thirsty at 110 km/h over 100 km/h too just because of the increase in cruising rpm, although can't say I've seen consumption that high (I have got an earlier model and it's STI swapped though)

2nd gear is usually the one that breaks on 5 speed Subaru's so it may pay to get that diagnosed sooner than later to be safe.

The car is completely standard, as far as I'm aware. The whine in 2nd goes away if I dip the clutch, which might be dodgy thrust bearing I guess. It's due for a service soon, so might take it Melville Subaru and see what they think. It has a full history at that dealership, so they should at least know something about it.

Avoid the dealers - they're there to make money not friends.
