Im not a mechanic, but no its not normal, and it sounds like your cluster might be on the way out? Or could be wiring - old and brittle - making shitty contact too?

Could try and unplug and re-plug your cluster, to ensure you have a good contact from the loom to the cluster. If problems persist, a replacement cluster is cheap enough on Ebay. Search "WRX cluster" but be aware that the different year GC8's have different plugs on the back of the cluster so you gotta buy one that suits your year of car.

Getting to the cluster isn't too hard, there are plenty of how-to's on the internet, try Google, and let me know if you get really stuck. Its only a couple of screws to get to the cluster. If I can do it, any dumb arse can do it

I think I'm really lucky to find one in this condition, it has a handfull of minor issues that I'm getting fixed before i do some further improvements on the car. I have often found myself on perth wrx even before i got my wrx so i thought its about time to join up

looking forward to making a few mates here and post updates on the car.

now for my first question...

The speedo sometimes won't work and to get it working again the previous owner told me i have to tap the dash until it works, which i do and it does work after a few taps.

I was wondering if this is common, what it could be and how hard is it to fix because the thought of me smacking the dash every second time i start the car upsets me.

Rising Sun Subaru in QLD sells clusters for $199 to $300, contact Kris and he should be able to sort you out.
