Default Brake Pads GC8

Hi guys,

Hope everyone's well

Sorry for what may perhaps be a silly question or soenthing that has been discussed before...

I've got a 1999 GC8 WRX built date April 1999 to be exact, I recently purchased a DBA rotor disc front and rear the Gold HD series, I am wanting to get the brake pads upgraded too, I'm looking at the Project MU HC series pad and looking at getting them online, the guys at Spares Box first ask me for Vin and engine no which I gave to them but to ensure they are giving me the right pad, they ask whether it is a 4 Pot Front and 2 Pot rear or 1 pot rear?

My research all seems to point 4 pot front and 2 pot rear but I am just confused why they are still asking me that eventhough I've given them the vin and engine no? So I just don't wanna get it wrong I suppose.

Just wondering if there is anyway of checking, sorry I am very newbie in WRX.

One other question is whether I could get a nice caliper to go with that? And any suggestion on where to look? that's not gonna cost the earth

Otherwise I will be planning to use the standard caliper and paint them.

Thanks guys

Post pictures and it'll be dead easy to see what you have if they are standard GC. I use winmax w5 pads but they are for the race car so might not be the best for road use?

Or take it to STECHNIC or MAXIMUM MOTORSPORT, they'll give you the right info and will more than likely have pads in stock.

Unlikely that your car came with 2 pot rears from factory, but they are a relatively common upgrade so it's always good to check. Only a select number of the GC8 STI models came with 2 pot rears as standard. Have a look through your rear wheels and see which of the following you have;

Single piston/pot caliper. Has the floating middle section and you can see the brake pad from the front. Most will be black/dark grey by now unless they've been painted.

Two piston/pot caliper. These came in red and black as standard, but may have been painted. If the Subaru logo isn't there, there'll be a flat rectangular surface where it should be.

Top-Deck likes this.

Thanks guys for all that info.... much appreciated

So after looking at the caliper it looks definitely a 1 pot rear.

Is it worth upgrading to a 2 pot rear? I kinda like the looks of it much better but I only use it for street use, not planning to do tracks or anything like that, but am planning to put VF34, injector and tune soon, I've already got TBE and STI intercooler in.

Where would I be able to source the 2 pot caliper to suit GC8? And would it fit the DBA rotor I already bought? It's the HD Gold series

Thanks again guys

If you're not going to use the car for "tracks or anything like that" then upgrading from one to two pot rears is fairly pointless from a performance and $$-out-of-the-wallet perspective.

The only good reason for doing it in your case would be to improve the 'look' (and hint: not many people are looking at your fully sick rear callipers ).

That said, it could 'future proof' the car when selling it to someone else, as the performance upgrades you're planning are something that someone could enjoy on the track (and you should be too

Ive seen parts guys get very confused when they look up subaru pads. Its because the parts system will come up with a number of different options of pads to suit the spec of the car. Unless they know a bit about subarus or you can tell them exactly which ones you want, then they got no clue. For example i think the gd inprezas come up with about 4 options for pads on the system. Base model, wrx 4/2s, sti 4/2s, and even a 6 piston option. And this is even worse when in the US, as they dont know what a sti is before 2004, and thier wrxs didnt get the 2 pot rears until after 04/05.

Thanks again guys for all the help and info.

I've had a look around and found a used 2 pot rear caliper off a GC8 STI RA selling for $198 plus postage, the seller said all the bolts are there except one of them is missing an brake pad which doesn't bother me much because I will be getting a new brake pad anyways.

Through further research I've come across a few people saying a Dog-Bone Adapter is needed.

My questions if anyone can help is:

1. Is that true and if so where would I find this Dog-Bone Adapter?
2. Will this be a problem fitting it with the DBA rotor I already bought?
3. I presume workshops like S-Technik or Maximum Motorsport can help me with this changeover or upgrade?

Thanks again guys

If you're SOR yes, a few options to help give in-person advice or complete the work. Yes, STechnic and Maximums are great. Tony Flood Motorsport in that area too.

The workshop thread here hasn't been updated in a little while, but it's mostly still relevant and at worst just Google the place for up-to-date contact & address info, as places like STechnic have moved.

Why the expensive rotors & track pads if you're not going to the track? Save yourself some money and buy normal street pads.

I've owned my GC8 since 2005, I've had it serviced every 6 months, and I've never had to have the rear brake pads changed. That's how much use they get for street driving.

If you upgrade to 2 pot rears, you will need the dog bone adaptors, and I'm on the belief you have to upgrade to 02-07 WRX rear rotors.

Spend the money on nice set of front rotors and pads
