Mining (from memory) contributes ~5% to Australia's GDP and employs ~2.5% of the Australian workforce. In terms of exports though, it makes up about 1/3 of all exports.

In reality, its a pretty small cog in the economy as a whole.

Service sector is ~70%. But you have to wonder how much of that service sector is there to serve mining related businesses.

i.e. My business is mining related. The jiffy van is service. But the jiffy van wouldn't come if there wasn't mining.

Main reason why the government hits that sector up for more 'income'. I mean tax. I mean resources rent. Or whatever they call it this week.

(Stats come from some newspaper thing I read last year so there is a 50% probability they are wrong )
Once you throw in the economic multiplier effect the loss of mining would be devastating to Australia.

20% still leaves 80% with nothing to do with mining and as such is far more important - no matter what way you screw it, mining isn't as important as most people think.....

Milne might want to consider who owns shares in these "big mining companies". Take a look at superannuation funds of each and every tax payer and voter in this country and you will find these same big mining companies shares in them. My business relies on the resource industry to employ hundreds of people and pays them very well for there services. In turn these employees spend their salaries with lots of other service industries, manufacturers and retailers in this country. Without it the future of this country would look like Greece or Spain. Less government interference and red tape is required to keep this industry employing people. The choice is yours on Sept 14th and I suggest each and every voter take this opportunity to reflect and consider the consequences of their vote. Do the research and make an informed decision when you vote for in the state and federal elections.

Winning internet arguments.

Which ever way the Greens look at this, they were never going to get their all out, to hell with the consequences, tax plan through. Their best hope was the ALP. It's still not what they wanted. So now they throw the toys out of the cot. It's a nice rosy world they live in with zero accountability and idealogical concepts.

Not saying mining is "unimportant", but the constant referral to it as the cornerstone of the economy is overplayed.

I'll vote for Elvis, Hendrix, Joplin before I'd ever vote for that liar.
