It's the biggest issue with the preferential voting system, most people don't understand it and political parties know how it works and abuse it with their backroom deals over preference distribution.

As an example, Adele Carles (local now independent / ex green Fremantle representative) is running even though she has no chance as an independent. However, she knows that her preferences will NOT go to the Liberal party. Hence, another green or labor minister most likely will.

All this because she got involved with the Buswell which anyone with even one brain cell would have realised was a recipe for disaster.

I think this is possibly why she has called the election so early. It would be suicide to change leaders half way through a campaign.

My guess is she thinks she can beat Abbott and not hockey or turnbull.
