Straight roads are for fast cars, twisty roads are for fast drivers. I have or am neither.

Cheers for the photos Jeckle, we will have to get some colour on the car for next season, so there is more contrast against the dust. Also fix the handbrake, as it doesn't work, Oh and also some more practice, so we can do bigger skids!

Not too worried about the matching rims, we have 6 of the rear Compomotives, and only two of the front Sparcos?? maybe we should put one pair on the left, and one on the right hand side, that way it would look better..
Our entire budget for a 5 rally season is about $8K (half of which is entry fees) so new rims always get pushed down the list of things to buy. Hell we haven't bought any new tyres since the 4 we used at Forest in March.

Safari rally review 2012

Round 5 of the state rally championship headed to its closest venue to Perth in October for the Safari Rally. Run out of Chidlow to the city's East, all of the special stages were based in the forests of Mundaring, not far from the Mundaring Weir.

Normally known as a rough event, recent grading of the roads and some welcome rain had helped to smooth out the stages before the start of the rally.

Going into the Safari Rally Alex Stone/Hanna Drury (WRX) held a slight lead in the state championship and needed to finish in 5th place or higher to clinch the trophy. Fellow WRX competitors Leigh Hynes/Stuart Percival were also in the title hunt, however needed the rally win and Stone/Drury to finish further back than 5th for everything to fall into place.

During pace noting and the early part of the event the weather was dry and the stages slightly dusty. Later during the rally some heavy rain fell which instantly reduced the dust and aided with traction.

The rally ran without major incident until SS5 when Sean Keating/Caleb Ash ran tight on a corner, rode up an embankment and rolled their Nissan Silvia into retirement. Until that point Keating/Ash had been charging hard, continuing their turn of speed from Lewana. Also retiring in SS5 was Raz Vlad/Damon Nicoli. The pair suffered gearbox failure in their Ford Fiesta ST.

Geoff Leatt-Hayter/Nial Doherty were having an interesting Safari Rally. A broken sway bar in the early stages slowed the team's Ford Escort. Once the car had been repaired in service, the engine then expired in SS7 which resulted in a small fire and retirement.

John Macara/Lee Tierney started out well on the rally. Around the midpoint, an altercation with the scenery in their Lancer Evo 7 slowed progress slightly. The pair were running 3rd in the rally until SS8 when a brake line issue caused their retirement.
As with all the rallies in the WARC this year, a huge battle had raged for 2WD during the Safari. Leading the pack was Kiel Douglas/Anthony Paynter in their big V8 Commodore. In SS8 a blown diff caused the pair to retire from the rally and the 2WD drivers' championship contention.

Without the dust of normal Safari rallies the race was on right until the end, even into the dark.

After 8 special stages and 110km of competition the top ten were in.
Aaron Willox/Jay Cruikshank brought their Galant VR4 to 10th place. Steve Oxley/Alex White in their current shape WRX took 9th however suffered with gear linkage troubles through part of the rally and a flat tyre which hampered progress. Doug Tostevin/Tammy Adams were having a troubled day in their WRX. By the last 2 stages the engine had lost power and heavy oil consumption meant a failing engine. The pair eased off to get to the end of the rally and finished in 8th place. Garry Whittle/Ryan Doe (WRX) finished in 7th place and brothers Craig & Scott Puzey brought their black Subaru Legacy RS home in a tidy 6th. The youngest driver in the event, Dylan King (Ford Escort) was next in 5th place. With seasoned competitor Rob Webber alongside for the Safari, King also clinched the state 2WD drivers' title when Douglas/Paynter retired earlier in the event. 4th place went to John O'Dowd/Bill Hayes (Spec C WRX) who also took the Group N class for 2012 as well. The Davies brothers Steve and Mark (WRX) had a very good drive on the Safari. The pair took a podium finish in 3rd place. Stone/Drury had driven a conservative rally and kept their run clean on this year’s Safari. 2nd place was ample reward and enough to ensure the 2012 WARC title. Hynes/Percival had done all that could be asked of them. Starting as car 1 on the road, they swept the lines for the following cars and set 7 of the 9 fastest stage times. The pair won the Safari and finished a credible 2nd in the WARC.
