Hey,
When replacing tyres on an AWD car(MY03 WRX), do ALL FOUR have to be replaced or just 2?(For example, right rear is stuffed so u change both sides of the rear). The reason i ask is because maximum motorsport advised me to change all for to keep all wheel diameters the same and therefore no diff problems, but city subaru told me i would only have to change the one thats stuffed, plus the opposite tyre. Im pritty much in need of a new tyre(running on the steel wires) but unsure how many i have to be replaced. What maximum motorsports told makes sense and is probally the safest way to go, but what subaru told me is a cheaper way .. so i hope its true(but i dont trust advise from any subaru dealership) Help will be much appreciated. -Nick |

You can drive it with a new and old tyre, but really on any car this is not safe, especially in an emergency break situation. You should always have matching tyres on each axle. We always reccomend replacing all 4 tyres on a awd car, and rotating regularly to keep rolling diameters roughly the same. How much tread is left on the rest of the tyres, if they are even slightly close then you should do all 4 in the intrests of safety.

You have a late model car worth over $30k and you're quibbling about outlaying money for tyres??.... please explain!
Perhaps retreads would be cheapest ![]() |

Just replace all four and sell off any tyres with decent tread on them to anyone who needs a spare or whatever.

Its best to do all 4, if for whatever reason, financially or otherwise you would like to do less then at a minimum do a pair (need to be opposite) as in either both rears or both fronts, not 1 front 1 rear.

Worn down to the canvas and steel hey.
Well if its that bad chances are you will need all 4 tyres replacing. Falken ST115's or FK452's will be great bang for you buck. Ring up Tempe tyres over East for the cheapest prices in Australia on Falkens would be my recommendation Or otherwise grab something in the for sale section. J

Cheers guys, yeah i would go for replacing all 4 tyres because my tyres are crap now anyways(crap unknown brand) but a bit low on funds atm, just looking to see if changing a pair on the same axel is an alternative. So its safe yeah? wont destroy the centre diff as i was told? If so, ill prolly just go for 2 for now then the other 2 when i have more money and rotate them when i put the last 2 of the 4 on(same tyre type ofcourse).
Cheers guys, appreciate it |
