Thanks Wombat. I know certain dealers don't like it when we change the ecu, certainly hope this is not the case with subaru

Tenagah would be my choice. Had a service done there aswell as having lowered springs fitted and then coilovers and really can't fault them. Polite, friendly, quick, honest service at very reasonable rates .

Plus Abdus paid me 200 bucks to write that !!

I haven't been to this place but got the details of a mate who owns a Forester and an Outback and said the following place was good.

Subaru Specialists
141 Kensington St
East Perth 6004
92212276
Barry Byrne & Jim Tink

They are RAC approved, but i have no other evidence that they are any good. If anyone has been there before please enlighten me. I just thought it worthwhile for other people as well who may want to try this place out, as i couldn't see it mentioned in the thread.

One would think mechanics are like doctors, one goes to see one with a simple cold and gets prescribed penicillin knowing that no one has discover the cure for a virus, meanwhile the other doc will prescribe liquid (whisky) aspirin and one is up and running the next day. One could say this is a matter of opinions.

There are bad and good mechanics, the bad ones will learn at one expense and the good one will fix it accordingly. Dealers inherently don’t have good (there is no money in selling new cars) mechanics, they pay is lousy and the service manager doesn’t know what he is talking about.

Privateers (non affiliated) go on their own as they think know more and sometimes they are right on the money. I think the problems comes (bad or good mechanic) is when one start tinkering with production cars and adding some sophisticated aftermarket gadgets whereby some mechanics will suffer as they don’t know nor have the input/data/specifications by the manufactures for those aforementioned gadgets and things don’t work out , thus bad mechanic.

A friend of mine WRX 99 wouldn’t star when hot, went to some here mentioned experts giving the most creative possible faults from the ECU to the rear wheel bearings, spend some time and money just to find out by the local BP mechanic that cheeking it with an ohmmeter the water temperature sender was faulty. Ok…maybe he was lucky, but he knew were to look and that what counts.

One can say too, nowadays car shouldn’t break down as intended for normal use and not abuse, advanced technologies gave us some amazing tolerances, warranties are sometimes up to 3 years and some with unlimited K, and the list goes on, but unfortunately people and including myself limitless abuse this magnificent (wrx) engines and when something goes wrong we like to blame the mechanics.

Good mechanic:

1. Takes you seriously.
2. Understands that you consider your money and your car important.
3. Listens to your car symptom description and works with you to narrow it down.
4. Conveys your information to the tech/mechanic doing the repairs.
5. Exhibits knowledge of systems, symptoms, possible causes, and diagnostic procedures to assign the correct possible cause to symptoms.
6. Sets up a diagnostic strategy such that you won't be out a huge amount of money and then find out the job's not worth doing.
Bad mechanic:

1. Considers you stupid or uninformed.
2. Is not concerned with your finances or your need for a good repair on a timely basis.
3. Tries to distill your symptom description into a couple short phrases, and then cuts off your further input.
4. Withholds some of your observations from the people doing the work.
5. Hems and haws when asked for possible explanations, or arrogantly champions one possible cause before that cause has been proven.
6. Seeks to majorly disassemble the car before giving you a good idea of the cost and scope of repair.

Sorry for the long post, by the way these are my opinions and not intended to offend any with a deferent view
