Default $1270 worth of seals?

G'day all,

Its time to bite the bullet and fix up some stuff i've been putting off for a while.
My car is burning a lot of oil and smells horrible!

I've been quoted to fix/replace

Rochercover

Sparkpug (seals??? spark plugs were done just recently so they dont need replacing, do they have seals?)

Gaskets

and because they have to take apart some things to get in there, they suggest I may as well do the timing belt too.....

this has landed me a $1270 bill. Good bye brake upgrade
Car is booked in to have the work done shortly

They said they have charged me for 5 hours + parts obviously. But should have charged for 7 hours.

Does this sound about right people? I cant really do any of the labour myself. and i'm not too worried about $100 or so. I guess I should see what the guy meant by spark plugs. If its just a seal or they are replacing them. I know the platinum plugs on my 1997 wrx are not cheap

5 hours labour to do all of that isn't too bad at all.

As for the remainder of the bill, even if the labour was charged at $100 per hour or something similar, the parts would easily make up the remainder of the $770 (especially if the timing belt kit includes pulleys).

Spark plug seals are the rubber rings which seal the spark plug tube from the rocker cover.. if these deteriorate, you'll get oil from inside the rocker cover leaking into the spark plug tube.

Also find out if the timing belt service includes a waterpump. Some do, some dont.
Wont cost much more to get done at same time but will cost heaps more later if it decides to leak.

5 hrs doesnt sound bad at all, ask for the complete list of everything they have replaced?? you could probably get a better idea then, If they have done most gaskets and seals on the engine then 5 hrs probs sounds pretty good and using gen parts 1200 could be about right.

remember a wrx engine can be a bitch to work on sometimes, breaking simple parts that cost bugger all might end up costing alot coz of the labour to get the part replaced, i have experienced that first hand, broke a 30 dollar shim on the valve bucket but cost me several hours in labour coz its a prick of a spot to get too.

Can I ask where you're getting this work done?
