Pull out the fuel pump assembly. And clean the contact area where for the fuel level sender. Use contact spray and a clean cloth.

now undo the 8(?) nuts on the oval hole and take off the hoses and loom
then pull out the fuel pump

or is the meter on the other one? :P

Top Picture has the fuel pump assembly and fuel level float. Do it on less than a 1/4 tank and let the car sit overnight to depressurise the fuel system. Do not switch on the car before starting work for at least a few hours.

Step 1: Disconnect the 3 hoses and unplug the wiring connector. Be careful of pressure still in the fuel system. Keep a big rag handy to soak up any spilt fuel immediately. Remember which hoses go where.

2: Undo the 8 nuts that hold the assembly in place. And lift out assembly. Be very carefull. Dont pull it straight out. The assembly needs to be maneuvered out slowly because of the fuel level arm float sticks out to the side a bit.

3: You will see the float attached to an arm that points away from the assembly. Move it up and down and you will see the electrical contact area that the arm is attached to that sends the fuel level.

4: Spray contact cleaner onto that area and gently and slowly clean the contact area with a clean cloth. If it gunked up heavily you can use a high grit wet/dry sandpaper to clean it but be very gentle so as to only clean the surface not rub it away.

5: Put the assembly back into the tank making sure that the gasket between the assembly and the tank is flat and not folded over. Tighten the nuts and reattach everything back in reverse order.
