Question unusal night

i was just around the corner from my house tonight and i was in second gear and i gave it a bit...and there was like a huge bang in my engine and like my boost just went off...i thort i blew my turbo ...i pulled into my garage and the car was still running and my revs wer going up and down on 700 to 1200...the car went off and i turned it back on and the revs were fyn staying on 1000...i went for a lap around the block (fast lap) and everything worked awsome again...but when reving down in gears my car doesnt pop as much as it did it now burples a little more...

Does anyone Know what that bang was
heres one for the Subaru Tech Division

Thanks

Nick

hows the power? Does it drive sluggish? Stable vacuum at idle?

Are you sure the bang came from the engine bay? could have been a momentary overfuelling and the bang was a big backfire caused by fuel exploding in the exhaust system. It can happen when the spark plugs get old or fouled and the spark is "blown" out and the air and fuel mixture is dumped unburnt into the hot exhaust system.

Get new spark plugs. Get a compression test just to be safe and sure. And then get on a dyno with a AFR readout.

But id say you just had a big ass backfire.

The knock sensor probably picked it up as big time detonation and retarded your timing heaps. That would explain your crappy idle that quickly restored itself once the ECU was seeing that the knock sensor was reading normal again.
