Closed deck
![]() Semi-closed deck See how the closed deck has lots of materials around the bores, where as the semi-closed deck just has reinforcement ribs? That is the difference. An open deck block is as below No reinforcement ribs or closed decking around the tops of the bores. It doesnt matter what you've got, unless your making ridiculous power and running HEAPS of boost (30 psi and above) in a race application, where some sort of reinforcement will help in preventing bore shift. |

Fairly simple answer to that.
Liberty RS = closed deck MY94-MY05 WRX = open deck MY06 WRX = semi closed deck MY02 onwards STi = semi closed deck As for the Jap models, I know some of the early RAs had closed deck but I couldn't tell you which ones. |

therefore why is everyone a fan of the 02STI onwards engine when a closed deck has more reinforcement?

finding a closed deck in good condition is difficult, plus 02 sti comes with factory forged pistons.
prior to this, they were ceramic (telfon) coated only. semi-closed deck still takes over 30psi without issue.
