the hardness of the clutch pedal is based on the pressure plate rating. not on the clutch plate itself. Generally though a button clutch would use a higher rated pressure plate so it would have a harder pedal than a normal clutch.

Not necessarily...a button clutch with the same clamping force as a full face clutch will have more pressure applied by the pressure plate...as there is less surface area for the pressure plate face to rest on.

Its a similar concept to someone lying on beds of nails....a large number of nails can spread the weight out more evenly, where as if you try and lie on one nail...it'll go right through you, because of the force applied to that one nail.

A real life example: When I had my RX7, my full-face organic sprung centre pressure plate, with 2500lb pressure plate actually had more slip than my 4 puck solid centre brass button clutch with 2000lb pressure plate. The brass button was much easier on the leg, but harder to launch than the organic. It was also a lot more shuddery and harsh, due to the solid centre...but the trade-off was big RPM launches were A-OK, and wouldnt tear the springs out of the hub

I'm talking about pedal harness. not the pressure applied onto the clutch face itself.

Yes, because there is less surface area on a button clutch the pressure per square inch applied onto the clutch face itself changes because the same amount of pressure is being applied to a smaller surface area.

AFAIK the amount of clutch surface area doesn't affect the pedal hardness.

AFAIK, the rating of the pressure plate diaphragm spring determines the hardness of the pedal. A lighter diaphragm makes the pedal softer i.e. less stiff.

What I'm saying is, a button clutch doesnt generally use a higher rated pressure plate....

The reason a button clutch doesnt generally use a higher rated pressure plate, is because the pressure plate applies more pressure per given area on a button clutch as opposed to a full face, due to the lower surface area of the button clutch plate....which means you don't have to use a stiffer pressure plate, and this directly affects pedal hardness.

I see your point now. Though everyone I know who has a button clutch (mainly nissan drifta wannabes) uses a higher rated pressure plate. It must just be them.

My clutch is so hard on the pedal feel that I only need to do weights on my right leg.
