A set of PPG 1-4 will not cost $4k. It is more like $7k.

If your have a 98 WRX with a 3.9 FD ration gearbox.

Your R160 standard rear diff in your car will be fine, but you will need to source a 4.11 ratio Crown Wheel and Pinion and change out the 3.9 one you have now in that diff. The 4.11 Final drive ratio gearbox will then mate up fine to your car.

Where you get a 4.11 CW+P from, you will have to do a ring around of the workshops / wreckers.

well my straight cuts 1-4 just went crunch

ppg gearset, 6.5k$ 18 months ago, from what i can tell the synchro ring somehow got pulled into the teeth and it got chewed, the metal from that then has gone thru the whole box, not sure of the extent of the damage yet.

if the cogs are damaged ill be going for a 6speed sti box, the whining noise isnt fun with a headache :P haha.

was a nice strong gearbox though, and at this stage we still arnt sure how it happened.

**happended when reversing out of a carpark, then noticed when cruising home from perth to bunbury that it was making a funny noise, by the time i drained the oil (which was pretty sparkly ) there were chunks of metal stuck to the magnetic cap.**

if the cogs are dmaaged it isnt worth the rebuild, if its just the bearings or the synchro ring it could still cost up to 3k apparently =\

Albins? 1-5 kit i think it is, little bit cheaper than the ppg and one extra gearset, also maybe see if u can get it in the RA 4.444 version for those fantastic ratios

sorry guys just bumping up my old thread as i didnt want to start a new one...

been noticing a whining sound of late at 4-5 thousand rpm in first and second, originally thought it was the gears going again although ive been much more careful with that 1st to second shift since i killed it before...
downshifting at highish rpm makes the noise too for instance 3rd to second down shift...

i dont think it is the gears because the same noise is made in neutral just revving it slowly to 5k i can hear it, just wondering if there is any simple thing it could possibly be such as a belt or something like that to put my mind somewhat at rest before i take it to someone professional...
also possibly thinking turbo maybe??

i know it would be difficult to diagnose with out hearing it in person but thought it was worth a shot
any help most greatly appreciated thanks guys
