Question hand brake backlash??????

ok when i apply the hand brake, there seems to be a bit of back lash in its application, ie - apply hand brake, lift foot brake car rolls forwards a couple of cm, is this normal? it reminds me of the dog type transmission hand brake on the army land rovers i used to belt about in, all my previous cars the handbrake had no lash in it, it works perfectly fine, just wondering if its normal and where is the lash?

where is it coming from? is the handbrake applied to the pads? as normal? seems a bit weird. and is application of the handbrake whilst moving ok (obviously off road in a controlled environment blah blah) as rapid take up of slack could possibly cause damage.........

Get your handbrake adjusted properly. If you park on a hill you should be able to apply the handbrake and the car won't go anywhere. What movement you do feel is the suspension compressing/decompressing, your wheels shouldn't move at all.

i dont think its the suspension, there is no take up its totally free play, the car is an 07 wrx. the hand brake holds the car absoulutly solid, so its not a cable tension problem, ill try rocking the car forwards/backwards in the morning.

I don't get it Your first post said the car rolls forward a bit, then you said it holds solid. I'm guessing that after it rolls forward it becomes solid. What I'm saying is it shouldn't do that at all.

And the whole suspension thing on the hills is just an example of a test. Obviously if you park on flat ground it won't happen as the weight of the car won't load the suspension either way. If you park on a hill (in neutral) and apply the handbrake, if you hear the brakes squeel or feel them shudder and the car does move, it's re-adjustment time. And if you have been doing sneaky handbrakies when Constable Care isn't around chances are the handbrake cable is stretched.

there is back lash, it seems to move a little, like between stops, but beyond this it is solid, its hard to explain, feels like gear back lash, the brakes arn't slipping.

The wrx has drums for the handbrake on the back. The grab onto the inside of the rotor. Nothing special there. The pads / discs are for day to day use.
