Upgrading Alternator Cable
Hey fella's
I'm tryin to work how hard/easy it is to upgrade the cable from the alternator to give my stereo/headlights more juice. I have upgraded the battery to an Optima and added another 5 earths to car still gettin flickering headlights so my next option is to get thicker cable for the alternator does this cable go straight to the battery ? this is what I have been told but from what I can see it goes under the Fuse box some where. Please DONT recommend me to get a Cap for my stereo because they are B.S Car is 99 WRX GC8 |

NEW ALTERNATOR,
cable is a passive item, more power requires a bigger alt. |

how about upgrading the wiring from your headlights to the fuse/relay box in the engine bay? and new relays too.

i dont see why it would cause whine? you are running another cable in parallel to the existing cable though as said the only problem is that you wont have a fuse, bad idea, but you could put a circut braker/another fusable link in place.
Anyway whine is usually caused by faulty capacitors in the alternator, or bad connections?

thicker cabling from the alternator wont fix the problem, you are kidding yourself to think it will.
turn the stereo down and accept the fact that your amperage draw is exceeding the battery supply. two problems- poor choice of battery and stock low amp alternator. have you done the basics? checked the amperage draw on peak load? checked the CCA capacity of your battery? checked the wire guage feeding the positive and negative circuits from your battery? checked the voltage drop? tested your alternator? checked your belts? earthed the amplifer? checked the bulb wattage?

Don't disregard the benefits of HID lights without actually seeing the difference for yourself. I have them in a 98 WRX and an RS Liberty, neither of them exhibit that flaring that thread refers to. I suspect they were deliberately installed with the focal point of the globe too far back. ie; it's easy to reproduce those results if you wanted to. They do not require projector type reflector either.

Upgrading the cable will do squat. A simple analogy, think of a pipe with water running in it. No matter how big you make the pipe you cannot increase the amount of water in the pipe without increasing the supply of water. Same principle in electrics.
Do the simple checks as per Tuna's recommendations above.
