It wont severely damage your engine but an aftermarket exhaust (usually bigger diameter than stock) will always run better and give better results if your car is TUNED for it.

Problems with aftermarket exhausts is usually boost spike which is when boost pressure hits or 'spikes' at a certain level, then drops and holds at a lower level. There usually is little boost spike on a stock car but the aftermarket exhaust can make the spike bigger, however, this problem wont SEVERELY damage your engine if damaging it at all.

To fix the problem, either tune your car or change the exhaust back to stock.

Assumed you had a wrx but looking at ur profile, you have a GX so boost spiking wont be an issue. However as mentioned above, your car may run richer ..

White smoke means burning oil.(correct me if im wrong)
If it was running rich, black smoke if anything should be coming out. The white smoke may be caused by something other than the exhaust, maybe u should get it checked out if theres alot of smoke ..

Ide say if you just have an exhaust on and no other mods, and not looking to get any performance out of it, dont worry about tuning it just for the exhaust. It will be a waste of money for such a small difference and your car wont need it for just an aftermarket exhaust. There will be no severe harm to your engine for an untuned exhaust.
