or just harsh driving.

and springs do alot on the subaru gearboxes. the spring ontop of the gearbox underneath the intercooler fixed my problem of a sticking clutch.

Not 100% sure but a good indication of synchros that are gone is when they crunch whilst changing gear. Popping out of gear would most likley be selector forks like Stru said id say.

oh ok then, is it bad that it does pop out of gear? because normally i just rest my hand on the gearstick to keep it in place...not biggy for me...but is it something i NEED to fix? eg. can it fu** up my gearbox in the long run?

didnt want to start a new thread...

so the 02 wrx gearbox ratio is 4.1.1.1 right.
how much horsepower do u think that could withstand? i mean if i had a sti intercooler with an ECUtek ecu and say a VF34 turbo with cold air intake and exhaust and other basic mods do u recon the gearbox could easily handle this or do they tend to not like anything more than the stock car?

The final drive ratio is 4.444.

It'll handle as much HP as you like...it depends how its been treated previously, what clutch you're running, and how you treat the box currently.

As I have said before in a previous thread....

- its more the clutch / gearbox / mechanical sympathy combo you look for not really the KW ATW.

94-01 WRX .......3.9 Final Drive ratio gearbox would be the weakest, especially if a heavy duty clutch is put in and you launch by dumping the clutch with no mechanical sympathy. The shock loading on the 2 - 3rd gearset will quickly strip 'em. Stick with a standard organic clutch if the car has been tuned, it will act as a fuse.

4.111 Final drive would be the next weakest due to the less torque loading on each gear tooth.

4.444 FD....02+WRX or GC8 STI would be the next up from that with less loading per gear tooth plus and increased gear tooth width compared to 94-01 gearset.

4.444 FD STI RA box then with all of the above plus hardening treatments on the gearset and billet steel selector forks.

The 4.444 Final drive ratio boxes seem to cope with 200+ KW ATW comfortably with sensible driving and no high RPM clutch dumping. Not a lot of sensible drivers appear to have broken em compared to the weak 3.9 WRX boxes.

Drags = get a STI 6 speed or a PPG 5 Spd for $$$$ and reliability
