Just look at the diagram on the top of the gear knob and wherever the gearstick is positioned in relation to the pic indicates what gear you are in. Theres your gear indicator..

If you are meaning the lights that show up on the dash that indicator if you are in Park, Drive, Neutral etc they are only on Auto's.

a gear indicator (if by this you mean the lights on the dash) would only be found in an auto car, or a car with a tiptronic or semi-automatic gearbox. But i guess, its something that could be intergrated within the ECU, as im sure the ECU knows which gear you are in by matching rev's and speed. Not something I have seen before tho

You could rig up something with a bunch of microwitches around the shifter mechanism - one for each gear.
When in a specific gear the associated switch grounds to earth and the gear # is illuminated on the dash.
Would be complicated and nasty

Some ECU's can do gear indication by referencing your RPM and road speed, to determine what gear your in. Same way that gear dependent boost control works.

This is the thread

I am just wondering if you can have a shift light/gear indicator in a manual? (without all the microwitches etc that Booga was talking about) I can't see how it would work as a plug and play type thing???
Doesn't seem like it can be done on a normal manual.
