Default Gearbox Dead!

Ok so after having my car for 3 days with 250hp atw, my box has gone to gbox heaven. However it was not due to harsh driving as i was shit scared to do so...

an explanation of what happened from another thread.

Just got my car back on the road and recently it started making a whining noise upon decelleration ( sounded like a dog box). When i first got the car back i thought it was the ball bearing turbo.

Today i drove in to work went to park my car, put it in first and it wouldn't go forward, it felt like the handbrake was engaged it would just rock back and forwards, tried reverse and same thing. I turned off the car put in neutral for a while, started her up and she was fine again just that the whining noise got louder and consistent...happens constantly now (not when stopped).

Spoke to a few people and the said it must of selected 2 gears or something when it wouldnt move and then probly busted a diff bearing??

The box was removed and checked out today, now apparently ( i am so not mechanically minded, so dont be harsh) the front diff and the rear diff are of different ratio's according to the mechanic so this is what caused the gearbox to blow due to the extra load or something....if someone knows how to explain what i mean in better mechanical terms please do.

my question is when i bought the 2nd hand complete motor...does the front diff section come connected to the motor or is it a part of the gearbox assembly. And then if so my only guess is that the owner of the engine had a different ratioed box in his car...which is an my99 and mine is an my00.

I have probably made no sense but yeh when i find out more i will share....Its a sad day

yes, u need to make sure the diffs match, because all the wheels are trying to turn at the same speed. If the diffs are different, then that force is tranferred into the driveline and somethign will die.

front diff is attached to the gbox section afaik, and im pretty sure 99 and 00 have the same gear ratios...wrxs, unless it was wrx to sti conversion??

the front diff lives inside the gearbox. normally a mismatched front & rear diff will lead to you shagging the centre diff, not the box itself. this would leave you with drive to the front wheels.

If you havent changed your gearbox or rear diff in your build then there must be another reason. how old was the gearbox oil ?

well the car did feel like it had heaps of power at the front wheels like when i was hitting boost hard and cornering....there was a fair bit of torque steer.

the gearbox oil as far as i know was put in at ASG over the last few weeks...

I have no idea one thing i noticed and not sure if could be the cause is...The clutch is a brand new heavy duty organic from Ross...its my second one...i noticed from the time i left ASG that it was not as hard to engage as the last time i got it installed, it was actually quite soft...( i know this because i was expecting to stall it a few times leaving ASG)...ASG did not install clutch but who did mite have fucked up, not sure??

haha wat i meant by hard driving is garbox abuse lol...there was none of that...and by corners it was something simple like changing lanes on boost....

Yeah the front diff and rear diff are different ratios. You have drop gears at the centre diff to make up the difference. Maybe take it to a mechanic who's a little more intune with wrx's.
