Question Half cut's worth it?

hey guys n gals,

I own a Impreza MY98 GX and i have some plans to convert it to a turbo.
now i know i've been told by a few people sell the GX and buy a WRX its all good and well but i like my car.

so what i want to know i guess is, is the best way to go about it a half cut and get the parts needed from the half cut? or buy the part and fit them?

next question. where would i find a decent priced half cut?

and finally where are some places i could take it to get it done?

cheers for your help guys n gals
n merry xmas

If you are going the change a GX to a WRX route, build something insane is my advice. At the end of the day it is a conversion so it won't be worth much should you ever sell.

If you are paying for someone to do the conversion, it will be probably cheaper to swap out of the GX into a WRX.

To start, try speaking to JWS for half cuts etc.

If you are doing the work yourself it can be worthwhile, but as Kato says if you intend getting a workshop to do it dont bother. I am about to do the conversion on my own car.
What i recommend is if you want to make life easy for yourself, buy a front cut of the same year as your car. Makes it easy when it comes time to do your dash wiring. You will get a gearbox with the cut but make sure you get the matching ratio rear diff.
Is your car FWD or AWD?
If FWD like mine, you will need fuel tank and straps, as well as the rear diff cradle assy.
Depends what you want to do after that, if you want it to be as close to a wrx as possible you need bonnet and interior, otherwise you could get an STI front cut and put a front mount behind the stock front bumper and keep it as a sleeper.

yeah its a FWD.

i just want to add some performance to the car. its mostly stock but going to get a bodykit for it first.
i know i probably wouldn't get much if i sell it but i intend to keep it for awhile if all goes well.

i'm probably going to get some things done by a workshop but i want to do most of it myself.

If a workshop is involved, sell it and buy a wrx, it will be too expensive
If you are doing it yourself, go for it!

being FWD you'll need a tailshaft, 4wd fuel tank & mounting straps, rear cross member, trailing arms, control arms, hubs with disc brakes & suspension, matching diff to your gearbox, diff cradle, handbrake cables etc. If you purchase a half cut from Japanese Wholesale (JWS) and tell them its FWD they'll be able to help you out with all the gear you need. There is no point getting a WRX cut, go for an STI of the same year as your shell!

Also remember to ask for all the bolts, nuts and clips you can get your hands on... nothing worse then looking for hours for 1 f**kin bolt !!

Definately do something like an STi otherwise it won't be worth all the hard work

Be prepared to spend a few late nights asking questions first... it may save you plenty of time in the long run

Brakes, diff ratio, computer, wiring, dash speedo and tacho suitability, exhaust, fuel pump, radiator, suspension, wheel stud ( 4 stud vs 5..).

You are talking about doing a conversion which will cost many thousands of dollars but your first thing is a bodykit????????????????????????

Cheers
Ken
